If you guys need help doing this stuff, then put out the call for help - there are plenty of telecomm/database guys who hang out at Free Republic who would be happy to be in charge of a local cache of Free Republic at a nearby colo [Northern VA/Atlanta/Texas/Wherever].
And the hardware for a local cache of a flat file structure shouldn't cost more than $1000 or so [and that's for new equipment - used equipment would be essentially costless].
I'm sure there are countless telecomm/database guys at Free Republic who have excellent 1U/2U servers lying around, unused, in their offices, or their garages, with dual gigabit ethernet, capable of supporting 16GB+ of RAM, which wouldn't have any problem serving up flat file structures on any major backbone in the USA.

I’ve been wanting to ask for a couple of weeks and this looks like a good opportunity:
Is there an alternative ip for FR?
Thanks.

Actually, you could move the “Pray for my kitty” threads to another database. You don’t want to turn this place into a another Lucy

Totally agree with Kidd. Get ‘er done. Also, you should be preparing for the future. Get the word out. If you need more dough say so and get the money, make the upgrades. Many of us are already seeing FR crashing mulple times per day, or at least slowing down.

I do believe that spreading mirrors across sites would be a great idea. I just dont think its something you can just do on a whim without exploding the whole darn thing.

Too bad this site does not accept funding like the MILLIONS Soros has supplied to the Duhmmies and MoveOn.org
But apparently accepting funding immediately removes your ability to be impartial and unbiased... or something like that.
Ask JimRob. He seems to think this site could not be kept the same if it was well-funded

You do know that JIMROB and staff have been working on installing some new servers, don’t you?
That is what has been causing the double posts, I believe.

JimRob and John Robinson:
Are those new servers Apple Macintosh computer servers? If so, Apple computers as servers are among the best. Plus Apple has a great track record to having the least problems with hacking attacks. Thanks for the response.

Agreed.
Need to have at least 1 mirror site and perhaps a COOP site besides.
I have noticed recently a good bit of timeouts and double postings from timeouts lately, and suspect we’re getting DOS attacks right now.
We’re be probed. Make no mistake
