Opinion: Obama Tried To Interfere With Iraq Negotiations During His Trip
Digital Journal ^ | Monday Sept, 15, 2008 | Susan Duclos

The New York Post has Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, on record, stating Barack Obama tried to interfere with ongoing negotiations with Iraqi leaders while on his trip to Iraq recently. While telling his supporters his plan to withdraw troops from Iraq within 16 months, Barack Obama was doing something far different while he was in Iraq. He was trying to talk Iraqi officials into delaying the agreement on a draw-down of the American military presence from Iraq, Zebari said in an interview with The New York Post.

According to Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, Obama made his demand for delay a key theme of his discussions with Iraqi leaders in Baghdad in July.

"He asked why we were not prepared to delay an agreement until after the US elections and the formation of a new administration in Washington

Why would he do such a thing?

Because in order for him to have any type of credibility he needed to convince Americans that things were still going badly in Iraq.

Despite some usual equivocations on the subject, Obama rejects pre-emption as a legitimate form of self -defense. To be credible, his foreign-policy philosophy requires Iraq to be seen as a failure, a disaster, a quagmire, a pig with lipstick or any of the other apocalyptic adjectives used by the American defeat industry in the past five years.

The fact that Iraqi officials are going on record to let people know what Obama tried to do is bad, very bad, but what is worse is that Barack Obama was telling his supporters one thing while deliberately, secretly doing another.

As the article points out, Obama's latest position has been to have U.S. combat troops out of Iraq by 2010, yet had he been successful in delaying the negotiations, that goal would have been impossible to meet as his advisers had to have known.

Supposing he wins, Obama's administration wouldn't be fully operational before February - and naming a new ambassador to Baghdad and forming a new negotiation team might take longer still.

By then, Iraq will be in the throes of its own campaign season. Judging by the past two elections, forming a new coalition government may then take three months. So the Iraqi negotiating team might not be in place until next June.

Then, judging by how long the current talks have taken, restarting the process from scratch would leave the two sides needing at least six months to come up with a draft accord. That puts us at May 2010 for when the draft might be submitted to the Iraqi parliament - which might well need another six months to pass it into law.

Worse yet, he was interfering with ongoing negotiations without the right to do so which could have jeopardized those very negotiations for no other reason than to use it for his campaigning.

Barack Obama has no authority to negotiate with Iraqi leaders, yet he did, which shows incredible hubris on his part as well as a lack of concern for what is best for America and replacing what is best for America with what is best for his own political aspirations.

Big mistake, rookie mistake and goes to show that Obama is willing to try to cause Americas defeat simply so he can obtain victory into the White House.

Far cry from John McCain, who fought for the surge in Iraq, which has succeeded as even Obama has recently admitted, with McCain saying back in 2007, via Politico, "I'd rather lose an election than lose a war."

Which man is willing to put his country before his campaign and political aspirations?

In July, according to a Fox embed, John McCain said it seemed to him Barack Obama "would rather lose a war in order to win a political campaign."

Perhaps he was right.

Obama will use the Rangle construct... “it was a language problem... the ragheads didn't understand English very well... Nothing here move along.”

When I hear Rudy, or Grahamnesty bring this up on meet the press, then I’ll believe it’s a fully vetted story. If such is the case, obama is done. The question is, will the democrats have a chance to prop up hillary as their nominee?

This is undoubtedly going to turn into a he said / he said argument, because Obama can't be so stupid as to admit this.

If Taheri has any kind of proof (such as a recording), Obama is toast. The left wing will give him a pass on this, but the independent center will abandon him quickly. Without any proof, I think it will be lost in the war of words and written off as negative campaigning.

I've seen a lot of articles noting the discrepancy between his campaign promises and this back-room dealing, but none (yet) have offered the most obvious explanation: Obama wants the troop withdrawal delayed so that he can take credit for it.

This is a interesting article, since Obama tells how there is no dialog with foreign leaders and he would talk to Iran’s leader and negotiate with our enemies to convince them they are wrong. This proves he has no abilities what so ever to do this if he can’t even negotiate with our allies. And that’s a good thing...

Yes it seemed like the front door was closed - the back door was still open though.

This better be in an ad since Obamai is going to use the economic mess to crucify John and the Sarahacuda. I want to see the Net flowing with national security ads telling the public of this type of Obama chicanery.

Caesar was a Head of State.

Brutus was a Senator that stabbed him in the back.

I brought up a page from the history cache - then clicked on the news/activism links in the upper left. Maybe that’s not a true back door but I got in.
