Opinion: Obama Tried To Interfere With Iraq Negotiations During His Trip
Digital Journal ^ | Monday Sept, 15, 2008 | Susan Duclos

Posted on 09/15/2008 11:02:47 AM PDT by Jet Jaguar

The New York Post has Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, on record, stating Barack Obama tried to interfere with ongoing negotiations with Iraqi leaders while on his trip to Iraq recently. While telling his supporters his plan to withdraw troops from Iraq within 16 months, Barack Obama was doing something far different while he was in Iraq. He was trying to talk Iraqi officials into delaying the agreement on a draw-down of the American military presence from Iraq, Zebari said in an interview with The New York Post.

According to Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, Obama made his demand for delay a key theme of his discussions with Iraqi leaders in Baghdad in July.

"He asked why we were not prepared to delay an agreement until after the US elections and the formation of a new administration in Washington

Why would he do such a thing?

Because in order for him to have any type of credibility he needed to convince Americans that things were still going badly in Iraq.

Despite some usual equivocations on the subject, Obama rejects pre-emption as a legitimate form of self -defense. To be credible, his foreign-policy philosophy requires Iraq to be seen as a failure, a disaster, a quagmire, a pig with lipstick or any of the other apocalyptic adjectives used by the American defeat industry in the past five years.

The fact that Iraqi officials are going on record to let people know what Obama tried to do is bad, very bad, but what is worse is that Barack Obama was telling his supporters one thing while deliberately, secretly doing another.

As the article points out, Obama's latest position has been to have U.S. combat troops out of Iraq by 2010, yet had he been successful in delaying the negotiations, that goal would have been impossible to meet as his advisers had to have known.

Supposing he wins, Obama's administration wouldn't be fully operational before February - and naming a new ambassador to Baghdad and forming a new negotiation team might take longer still.

By then, Iraq will be in the throes of its own campaign season. Judging by the past two elections, forming a new coalition government may then take three months. So the Iraqi negotiating team might not be in place until next June.

Then, judging by how long the current talks have taken, restarting the process from scratch would leave the two sides needing at least six months to come up with a draft accord. That puts us at May 2010 for when the draft might be submitted to the Iraqi parliament - which might well need another six months to pass it into law.

Worse yet, he was interfering with ongoing negotiations without the right to do so which could have jeopardized those very negotiations for no other reason than to use it for his campaigning.

Barack Obama has no authority to negotiate with Iraqi leaders, yet he did, which shows incredible hubris on his part as well as a lack of concern for what is best for America and replacing what is best for America with what is best for his own political aspirations.

Big mistake, rookie mistake and goes to show that Obama is willing to try to cause Americas defeat simply so he can obtain victory into the White House.

Far cry from John McCain, who fought for the surge in Iraq, which has succeeded as even Obama has recently admitted, with McCain saying back in 2007, via Politico, "I'd rather lose an election than lose a war."

Which man is willing to put his country before his campaign and political aspirations?

In July, according to a Fox embed, John McCain said it seemed to him Barack Obama "would rather lose a war in order to win a political campaign."

Perhaps he was right.

Not heard anything about this on Foxnews.

It's on their website.  They're probably saving it for the evening news.

If McCain will raise the query himself, it will become an issue.

Thanks. I was long gone and couldn’t listen to my Sirius radio when he was on. I’ve pretty much quit listening to the Tony Snow Show, errr, Brian and the Judge, and he might have been on that show too.

None dare call it treason.................

Everyone is so politically correct, they're afraid to enforce the law.

Just look at the illegal immigration laws that have been broken by 20,000,000 illegals.

This guy would sell us out, all of us, for his own power. Look how quickly he throws his associates under the bus. No wonder they can’t find anyone from his childhood or school years to come out and extol his virtues.

Worse, the media will cover for him by instituting the “cone of silence” regarding 0bama’s past and his current antics.

Scary, isn’t it?
