Do Yard Signs and Bumper Stickers Help a Candidate? (vanity)
vanity ^

Posted on 09/15/2008 11:02:01 AM PDT by Tigercap

Sorry if this vanity is not appropriate.

I am passionate about this election. I know we should be doing a lot more than just this...but, Does planting a McCain-Palin Yard Sign and applying a McCain-Palin Bumper Sticker help the cause at all? What's your experience? Has there been any studies on this?

I think it does.It at least gets neighbors talking!
Re the bumperstickers...I proudly display mine and get some “thumbs-up” from folks passing my car on the road,or even a “I couldn’t agree more” from people who pass me in the parking lot at the grocery store. In any event, it makes me feel good and I feel as if i’m making some kind of difference, regardless of how small.

“They do two things. They encourage fellow supporters to also stand up, creating a unified voice. They also sway the pop-culture type voter who does what is popular or what follows the crowd.”

I agree with you. In the last two weeks, yard signs for McCain have drastically increased around the area that I live in. Only a few Obama signs here and there. A pop culture type voter might be persuaded to vote on what they see.
And it makes me smile to see them all.

I don’t know about everyone else,

but I’m always curious about what kind of kook is driving the car with the 0bama sticker on it. I’ll get next to them to take a peek.

Usually a young kid.

Yeah, I tend to agree with that. Bumperstickers are the new highway billboard, for better or worse.I’ve had much, much more positive reaction to my McCain-Palin stickers than negative ones.

I have a Maverick/barracuda bumper sticker on my truck but my yard signs tend to get only the vandals attention

Get a magnetic sheet and put the sticker on it. Just walk behind your car and take it off when you park.

I get plenty of #1 driver signs in Austin when I have my No BO sign on my pickup. Thumbs up when I get closer to home.

Branding is one of the most effective forms of marketing. Look at the money companies pour into NASCAR sponsorships

Value of lawn signs is moot here in the twin cities. The crack RNC team and/or the McCain campaign haven’t been able to supply McCain/Palin lawn signs to the Victory Office here even though it’s now been 2+ weeks since Sarah was picked.

No, you can’t buy it. What you can do is go to the cheapo store and buy some work gloves. Cut up a bunch of poison ivy, and rub it all over your sign. Throw away the gloves, and use another pair in Nov. to take the sign down. Put it in a garbage bag so you don’t mess with your garbage man.

They help from the standpoint of motivating other like-minded people to become motivated and rally around the candidate to activism. They also help the candidate to keep going day after day as he sees them around town.

When I used to manage campaigns my first instructions to people posting signs, whether paid vendors or volunteers, was to give them a map of the route the candidate drives to work or to the campaign HQ and insist that the route be plastered with his/her signs

For several months it was nothing but Obama here, but suddenly, McCain stuff is everywhere, it seems the apathy on our side is off. I laughed at a stoplight at lunch almost every car I could see in front of me had a McCain sticker on it and one beater had an Obama sticker.

I have been stopped four times by people asking me where I got my Maverick/Barracuda sticker. Luckily I keep a roll of 50 McCain stickers and had about a dozen Maverick/Barracuda ones that I hand out whenever someone asks.

I have seen “Family for McCain” yard signs this week in my neighborhood. I think that’s GREAT!

I do that too, discreetly, just out of curiosity...Of course, when the Obama sticker is on the bumper next to the “Bush Lied” and “Rage Against the Machine” stickers you pretty much know what they look like...

I’ve heard of magnetic ones so you can take them off and place in trunk while parked. I just put a McCain/Palin sticker on my car this weekend. Will see when I get off work if I’ve been keyed.

I hardly ever see an obama sticker and have yet to see an obama yard sign.

I just got mine in on Friday even though I ordered them overnight the day Palin was announced. They said they had more orders in two hours than they sometimes get in a campaign season- they just where overwhelmed.

Based on what I’ve seen from election results and the amount of yard signs/bumper stickers for one candidate or another is a little surprising.

I live in a very conservative area, however in 2000 and in 2004 Gore and Kerry signs FAR outnumbered Bush signs. There were easily 5x more. Bush easily won here by 70-75 points.
