Lieutenant governor demonstrates she is not ready to lead in a crisis
Charlotte, N.C. During an interview yesterday on WBT Radio in Charlotte, Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue advised motorists to get out and get our gas tanks as full as theyll let us do it during in the next 24 or 48 hours due to Hurricane Ike. When questioned by host Al Gardner if this would create a panic, Perdue flip-flopped and said people should not overact and there is no need for anybody to rush right out.
In sharp contrast, Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory demonstrated responsible leadership in an official statement yesterday saying, Due to the reduced flow of gas supplies out of the Gulf Coast, the City of Charlotte has implemented a conservation plan for the city fleet of vehicles to curtail the use of non-essential vehicles this weekend. I encourage all citizens to also implement a fuel conservation plan to conserve fuel over the weekend and remain calm until the full impact of Hurricane Ike on the nations gas supply can be determined.
The Charlotte Observer reported today that area gas pumps ran dry and prices spiked more than 50 cents within a few hours on Friday. Click here to read the story.
The following is a statement from Mayor Pat McCrory :
During times of crisis, leaders need to be very careful not to create a panic. It was grossly irresponsible for the lieutenant governor to advise motorists to rush out and fill their gas tanks and drive prices up and then cause confusion by quickly contradicting herself. This is not a sign of responsible leadership, especially during a crisis.
Below is a partial transcript from Charlottes Morning News on WBT Radio, 8/12/08:
Beverly Perdue: this is a temporary price gouge, because thats what it is, folks trying to get the most money they can get out of the limited capacity.
Al Gardner: You bet just 30 seconds left. Who should do what about that?
Beverly Perdue: I think we all need to get out and get our, uh, get our gas tanks as full as theyll let us do it during in the next 24 or 48 hours. And then we continue to watch what happens in the Gulf. Then, then the whole question becomes on Sunday to assess the damage. And from there we know what we have to do; I mean the country has this, we all know this, uh supply, this emergency supply that they can let go and this would be a time that the president and the Congress should have to authorize us using
Al Gardner: But very quickly, Lt. Governor Perdue, if were urging everybody to go out and fill their tank right now in the next 24 hours wouldnt that by definition create a panic?
Beverly Perdue: Oh, oh I dont mean that at all, and I didnt mean to imply that. What I would do is to be very cautious about it not to overreact if you need gas get some, but there is no need for anybody to rush right out because this is not going to be long term. Uh, the country has this supply that theyve kept in waiting for this so I, uh, the truckers here, the folks who are on the road, find gas available, but what I was trying to say is dont be concerned that youre not going to be able to find it somewhere. Its that there is still is a supply in this country; its not like last night while we were asleep somebody sucked all the oil out of the tanks all over the country. But it has been raised a buck and its really hard.

Talk about unqualified and incompetent. Will NC really elect our own Kathleen Babineaux Blanco?
Well, it’s time to empty out the lawnmowers, the generator, and empty all the cans of whatever petrol you stashed. Drive that ‘spare car’ that has gas in it, or siphon it out. Got any paint thinner or benzene to burn off?
What?!?! You didn’t stash some petrol for emergencies?
“Born in Grundy, Virginia, Perdue earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Kentucky; she then earned a master’s degree in education and a doctoral degree in administration from the University of Florida. She worked in the fields of education and health care before entering politics.”
Let’s hope that NC wakes up and doesn’t elect this unqualified moonbat to governor... or we’ll be hearing way too too much about her after 0bama loses, and she throws her hat in for 2012...
Mr. Its took supplies and gas this morning to family in east Texas where Ike went through. He had to lock down the gas containers because it’s being reported that theives wait at red lights to steal gas from vehicles. Family says they won’t have electricity for 4 weeks. Good luck to all who are in disaster areas.
I don’t think NC has anything on PA’s LT Gov-Catherine Baker Knoll.
BUMP.
It’s hard to believe our Lt. Governor can be this irresponsible (and stupid).
You just reminded me that I have gas in a car that isn't running...DOH! Guess I'll get the ol' siphon out!
$3.94 at Maxwell AFB in Montgomery, and plenty off it. The price sux, but there’s enough.
She’s actually RUNNING for governor? What a rock! As in dumb as.
Perdue- Go back to packaging chickens, please.
She’s brilliant. /sarc
Bev, you are one giant buffoon.
Perdue is dumb as a box of rocks.
Cripes. The DownEast Kleptocracy will have to execute brazen power to push this bit of fluff across the finish line first.
