Brazil Plans to Build 50 More Nuclear Power Plants ( while America plans to build... windmills! )

RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Mines and Energy Minister Edison Lobao announced Friday Brazil plans to build 50 to 60 nuclear power plants in half a century, with each having capacity of 1,000 megawatts.

"The general idea is to build one plant per year," he said during a visit to the construction site of Brazil's third nuclear power plant, Angra 3.

The ambitious plan, a priority for the administration of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, has yet to be approved by Brazil's National Council of Energy Policy, he added.

The construction of Angra 3 started in 1984, but was halted for21 years. The decision to resume the project and expand the nuclear program was welcomed by Brazil's industrial sector as a way to prevent an energy crisis in future decades, but environmentalists warned of the problem of the residues storage.

The imagery of Harry Reid atop a panicked donkey decked out as Don Quixote jousting with offshore oil rigs comes to mind, for some reason.

“We should be doing the same.”

But... But... But... They have the Miracle Fuel: Ethanol. Why do they need nuclear power?

Brazil tried ethanol; guess it didn’t work out so good. Why are they drilling off shore in deep water, building nukes and going after oil-shale now?

They are doing now everything we should have started doing 20 years ago.

Gotta hand it to the Brazilians; sounds like they got their act together!

Pelosi invests in Picken’s wind company. If a Republican did that, they would brought up on charges.

So, to make Pelosi and her Stalinist friends even wealthier, we have to build windmills instead of nuke plants.

Brilliant. Well, Obama is right. He does stand for change. Making the USA like the corrupt socialist shithole that is Mexico.

Hey Barak and Nancy! Why do Mexicans and Central Americans keep coming to the USA? Is it because their home countries suck and they can’t make any money? So, we plan to turn our country into Mexico? IS THAT YOUR PLAN TO HALT THE ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION? MAKE US AS BAD AS MEXICO AND VENEZUELA??????!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dems like to repeat endlessly that you can’t drill your way to energy independence, but in fact Brazil did exactly that. They are famous for their bio-fuels, but thats a small part of the whole. They drilled their way to oil independence.

Now they are determined to step it up a notch, focusing their efforts on nuclear power generation. Could we borrow some sanity from Brazil? If we could replace our Dems with Brazilians chosen at random we’d probably be better off.

Some of you republicans seem to forget that it was a republican that canceled out last two nuclear power plants after much of the construction had been done.

Brazil’s ethanol program is much more efficient than most others since it is sugar cane based. Breaking cane down to raw chemical components is easier than corn because of the physical properties. Put some corn in a pot and some sugar and see which one melts down to a liquid first. Or look at it this way. We have to turn corn into sugar, then into fuel. They skip a pretty large fuel consuming step. However, biofuels of any kind still consume alot of energy to produce. The lesson learned is that to grow an economy with a growing population, you need multiple elements of energy sector expansion. Don’t hold your breath waiting for the US Congress to wrap their minds around that concept.

India and China will definately be world powers. Russia is encumbered both by culture and an inefficent economic system (basically Nigeria with nukes, without the ethnic divisions, and with a higher rate of literacy). I know Brazil fairly well, and think that while it may rise to be a mid-tier economic player, it really needs to address issues of economic imbalance between the south and north, as well as the educational system.

Gee, why don’t we just put B. Hussein and Michele Obama, the Reverent Wright, Bob Beckel, and a few windbags from Congress in a line in front of the windmills and get them all yammering?

and so while solar & wind tech is vulnerable to the variances of the weather, nuclear power plants are not and can be more protected in comparison.

The US congress does not wrap their minds around anything that does not make them money. In short when K street tells them it's ok, they may do something.
