$30-million ad blitz aims to ease the tourism slump in Michigan

Michigan (Detroit Free Press) - The music starts. The hazy images appear. A pond. A sunrise. A porch. A windmill. A sailboat. Then the wistful voice begins: "Twenty-five thousand mornings, give or take, is all we humans get."

This TV ad has been playing all summer in select cities across the Midwest, enticing visitors from Chicago, St. Louis, Cleveland and Detroit to vacation in "Pure Michigan."

The $17.5-million campaign - all heart and naked emotion - is designed to appeal to our secret longing for simplicity, thus drawing big bucks and new tourists. Starting next month, the state will spend an additional $30 million in the tourism campaign.

Last year, in its first summer, Pure Michigan - created by the McCann Erickson ad agency - was credited with bringing in about 1.5 million new out-of-state tourist visits, mainly from Illinois and Ohio. The gain, however, was offset by a 10% decline in tourism by cash-strapped Michigan residents, and overall visits plummeted by 6.3 million.

This year's results won't be released until Jan. 1.

Supporters say the state needs to look at things this way: The Pure Michigan campaign may be preventing the tourism situation from being worse.

What we need is a $30 million ad campaign INSIDE Michigan. I was thinking... Jeremiah Wright and Kwame Kilpatrick.

If they would spend that $30 Mil promoting DRILL HERE, DRILL NOW, BUILD REFINERIES, people might actually be able to AFFORD vacations in Michigan...

All that for me to go dip my toes in Lake Erie...

What would help is putting a crater where Detroit is.

Ping.

Been considering a tour --was going to take my wife on one this year (she's never seen MI's beauty) but put it off-- maybe I'll wait until MI votes in responsible leadership. The actuarial tables say I can put off a return visit for a few decades yet... maybe it'll be be a little more like "home" then, at least maybe a bit less decrepit than what it must be like today.

With the crusty dead-soul democrat governor and democrat decades of democrat party societal engineering to the economy, this really is like trying to put an evening gown and lipstick on a sow! She may go to the dance, but she’s still going to be nothing but a noteworthy pig.

I love the radio commercials. Tim Allen narrates them and they always bring a tear to my eye.

It really is a beautiful state. I enjoyed visiting my family there in August - the weather was truly lovely. Sadly, the signs of economic hardship are evident, and we saw some disrepair and distress. Nonetheless, I love Michigan.

How about, "Come to Dearborn, see the Mecca of the West."

"$30-million ad blitz aims to ease the tourism slump in Michigan"

That reminds me of a tourism slogan I read once about the Island of Nantucket.

Come to Nantucket, we used to kill whales.

Michigan is beautiful in the autumn...my favorite time of year here. It’s like three or four regions of the U.S. wrapped into one. A sunset on Lake Michigan is breathtaking.

Don’t put it off just because of Granny, oh, and just give Detroit a wide berth, then you’ll be fine.

Agreed. There’s SO much more to Michigan than unions, car manufacturers, and Detroilet.

Come over to the West Side. It’s gorgeous. And so is Up North.

Western Michigan is in pretty good shape.

I love vacationing in Michigan. North Michigan is a crown jewel I will put up against just about any place in the country. I would be able to be up there more often if I have more MONEY in my pocket. Spending 30 million on this is a waste. Why not use that to fix roads, invest in refineries, and have more jobs here so we can tour Michigan more often in the future.
