The feeling is familiar. I had it four years ago and four years before that: a sinking feeling in the stomach. It's a kind of physical pessimism which says: "It's happening again. The Democrats are about to lose an election they should win - and it could not matter more."

Look at yesterday's opinion polls, which have John McCain either in a dead heat with Obama or narrowly ahead. Given the well-documented tendency of African-American candidates to perform better in polls than in elections - thanks to people who say they will vote for a black man but don't - this suggests Obama is now trailing badly. More troubling was the ABC News-Washington Post survey which found McCain ahead among white women by 53% to 41%. Two weeks ago, Obama had a 15% lead among women.
There is only one explanation for that turnaround, and it was not McCain's tranquilliser of a convention speech: Obama's lead has been crushed by the Palin bounce.

Of course I know that even to mention Obama's support around the world is to hurt him. Incredibly, that large Berlin crowd damaged Obama at home, branding him the "candidate of Europe" and making him seem less of a patriotic American. But what does that say about today's America, that the world's esteem is now unwanted? If Americans reject Obama, they will be sending the clearest possible message to the rest of us - and, make no mistake, we shall hear it

The writer must be a bitter Cornwallis descendant.
The Brits would be speaking German or Russian now if it weren’t for men that WEREN’T like Kerry and 0bama.
We'll get a twofer on November 5th, watching both DemonRat and Euroweenie heads explode!
Who has those pics of the crying Kerry supporters? How predictive could they be?
Polling in Russia? Like Prager always says, "the world doesn't hate America, the left does".
Do NOT believe the nonsense that world esteem belongs only to Obama. Only left wing Euro establishment esteem belongs to Obama.
The rest of the world respects and wants a STRONG, FREE America.
They like American money and American handouts. They don’t like the freedoms that Americans have.
Yes I think you are right. That’s the spelling.
It was Spike ‘I hate Portsmouth’ Milligan who always signed himself ‘Milligna’ there-after in his (much missed)regular letters to the Private Eye.
America is great for suprising the world and come November 4th, 2008, America will suprise the world once again when the veteran Sen.McCain/Gov.Palin get elected.
It must suck to be the rest of the world and not be able to participate in something they seem so interested. Tough.
Funny I seem to recall a lot of European outrage that Americans had any opinion on their failing govt.
That and the repeated accusations of nation building and colonization by the US.
So much time in the Public Schools he has to type standing up.
In fairness it did allow regular columnist Nick Cohen recently to slam into its anti-Americanism and pro Islamic stance without sacking him. (we Brits just have to find a balance in everything!) ;^)
fantastic email!
She kind of looks like a man.
This is from the same Euroweenie crowd that thinks calling an American a cowboy is an insult.
“But what does that say about today’s America, that the world’s esteem is now unwanted? If Americans reject Obama, they will be sending the clearest possible message to the rest of us - and, make no mistake, we shall hear it”
But would you hear the “Mind your own business” message we’ll be sending you? I doubt it.
How about we don’t try to elect your leaders and you don’t try to elect ours. Especially since it would cause you much joy to see America in the toilet.
LOL!
GOOD. You need to hear it, loud and clear.
“The whole reason that all of our ancestors came to this country way back when was because they did not want to have anything to do with Old Europe.”
Yes, and they still don’t get that. They are so full of inflated opinions of themselves that they cannot grasp we don’t give a rats behind what they think of us. Never have and I hope never will.
