The feeling is familiar. I had it four years ago and four years before that: a sinking feeling in the stomach. It's a kind of physical pessimism which says: "It's happening again. The Democrats are about to lose an election they should win - and it could not matter more."

Look at yesterday's opinion polls, which have John McCain either in a dead heat with Obama or narrowly ahead. Given the well-documented tendency of African-American candidates to perform better in polls than in elections - thanks to people who say they will vote for a black man but don't - this suggests Obama is now trailing badly. More troubling was the ABC News-Washington Post survey which found McCain ahead among white women by 53% to 41%. Two weeks ago, Obama had a 15% lead among women.
There is only one explanation for that turnaround, and it was not McCain's tranquilliser of a convention speech: Obama's lead has been crushed by the Palin bounce.

Of course I know that even to mention Obama's support around the world is to hurt him. Incredibly, that large Berlin crowd damaged Obama at home, branding him the "candidate of Europe" and making him seem less of a patriotic American. But what does that say about today's America, that the world's esteem is now unwanted? If Americans reject Obama, they will be sending the clearest possible message to the rest of us - and, make no mistake, we shall hear it

I sent him the following e-mail, to which I doubt he will respond, but here it is:

Geez, I don't even know where to begin, with a fool like yourself.
Why is it that "Internationalist" One-World commies like yourself have this incredibly silly belief that Americans give a rat's ass what the world thinks? Because a brother commie like O'bambi (or John Kerry in 2004), neither of whom I'd consider patriots, believe that "America's reputation in the world needs to be repaired"? You continue to believe them, and to believe that Americans care what you and other internationalist twits think.
If you were here (in the greatest nation on God's green earth), I would tell you: "America, love it or leave it." Since you're not, I'll simply say: "Piss off"
You in the UK, and across the European Crapola Union can keep on digging your political and social graves by making yourselves more and more dependant upon a bunch of bureaucrats to tell you all what to do, when and how to do it, what to think and eat and buy and sell, and how to live your lives. And you can continue to see what freedom you still have dwindle down, further and further until you are part of a big glomp commie union, with no culture of your own, and no identities of your own, and no voice of your own.
As for us Yanks, we'll keep our freedom, and our identity, and our greatness as the strongest and the best nation the world has ever known; and yes, we'll even continue (although I sometimes question why), to pull your British (and european) asses out of the fires that will be consuming you all as you are overtaken by Putin and radical islamist extremists. But we'll continue to live our lives as WE see fit, not as you see fit.
And if that means that we don't have your "respect," then that will be one of the smaller prices that we have had to pay for freedom.

Well boo frickin hoo
You got THAT right!!!
To quote an old biker:
“FTW!”
>>>But what does that say about today’s America, that the world’s esteem is now unwanted?
Its not so much that the “world’s esteem” is not wanted. . . frankly, I could take it or leave it. The problem is, the price that the “world” expects for this “esteem” is simply too high. Americans will not trade what makes them and this nation great for a little bit of not-so-useful “esteem”.
(Conversely, those who are truly our friends and allies, will provide us with all the “esteem” that we need, even if we don’t cow-tow to the internationists.)
From the UK: you don’t need me to tell you that what the rest of the world thinks is neither here nor there. The Guardian is a liberal lefty paper with ‘one world politics of hope’. ‘nuff said.
I agree, boo hoo....
We've been telling you weaklings to kiss off for years. You can't muster the will or the strength to confront the islamist threat at your throats in your own country's and you expect the USA to care what you think? Western Europe is history.
Tough. Get over it!
I would just ask the writer of this article one question. When has America ever cared what the rest of the world thinks? The whole reason that all of our ancestors came to this country way back when was because they did not want to have anything to do with “Old Europe”.
Hey “World”
BITE ME
Cheers, Uncle Sam
Bye, haters.
If the world becomes U.S. citizens, pays taxes, and works here, then maybe they can have an opinion on our Presidential race.
That’s ok, Mr. Freedland. I will plead “necessity” and “self-defense.”
euroweenies.
You'll find your tiny brains will hurt less if you try not to speak.
They really should buy a full page add in the major USA newspapers. Nothing like a threat from pants wetting Europeans to rile up the voting base.
The Guardian did this 4 years ago when they did a letter camapign to Clark County Ohio voters.
