Obama poked fun of McCain and Palin's new "change" mantra.

"You can put lipstick on a pig," he said as the crowd cheered. "It's still a pig."

"You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It's still gonna stink."

"We've had enough of the same old thing."

The crowd apparently took the "lipstick" line as a reference to Palin, who described the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull in a single word: "lipstick."

Obama is not a sane man. No sane man would say the crap he does in a presidential race and think it will fly.

Well, I’m nearly 60 and I’ve always, ALWAYS, heard that expression as “You can’t hang earrings on a pig.” LIPSTICK never was part of the equation.

It's actually a very common expression. E.g., this advice from an information technology book:

Attempting to present data without thought as to the analysis often gives rise to presentations that are nothing more than stylish gloss on a stinky foundation. It is the act of putting lipstick on a pig.

Caution: Under no circumstances should you put lipstick on a pig — it just isn't as funny as you might think. If you want guaranteed mirth, go for mascara on a crab every time.

I do not think this will backfire at all against Obama but it will for sure backfire on our side if we keep pushing it.

I'm with you. I'm all in favor of abandoning political correctness and calling it the way it is. This was not a good idea on Barack's part, but it opens up the floodgates for every un-PC comment anyone can throw at him.

Just saw it, yeah, he’s letting the audience infer the lipstick; Pig; Palin connections. Otherwise, why the long pause line in a cliche phrase.
