Teeter-Totter in NC Governor Race Tips Republican (Palin Has Coattails for McCrory!)
SurveyUSA ^ | 09/09/2008 | SurveyUSA

In an election for North Carolina Governor today, 09/09/08, 8 weeks to the vote, Republican Mayor of Charlotte Pat McCrory seesaws into the lead over Democratic Lieutenant Governor Beverly Perdue 49% to 41%, according to this latest SurveyUSA election tracking poll conducted exclusively for WTVD-TV in Raleigh. Compared to an identical SurveyUSA poll released four weeks ago, McCrory is up 5 points and is in the lead for the first time; Perdue is down 6 points and trails for the first time. Libertarian Mike Munger, a professor at Duke University, takes 5% of the vote today, unchanged from one month ago.

McCrory has gained ground in many key demographics: men, women, young, old, less affluent, more affluent, less educated, more educated. In Charlotte, his home town, McCrory's once 10-point lead is now 27 points. In Raleigh, Perdue's once 18-point lead has evaporated. Only in Southern and Coastal NC has Perdue gained ground month-on-month.

Filtering: SurveyUSA interviewed 900 North Carolina adults 09/06/08 through 09/08/08. Of them, 783 were registered to vote; of them, 671 were determined by SurveyUSA to be likely to vote in the 11/04/08 general election. Incumbent governor Mike Easley, first elected in 2000, is term limited.

Also Liddy Dole has opened a bigger lead over her opponent for the Senate seat:

In Face of Stiff Opposition, Dole Holds Her Ground, Adds to Modest Lead: In an election for United States Senator in North Carolina today, 09/09/08, 8 weeks till votes are counted, incumbent Republican US Senator Elizabeth Dole defeats Democratic State Senator Kay Hagan 48% to 40%, according to this latest SurveyUSA pre-election tracking poll conducted exclusively for WTVD-TV Raleigh. Libertarian Christopher Cole remains a factor.

Compared to an identical SurveyUSA poll released last month, Dole is up 2, Hagan is down 1, Cole is flat. At a time when Republicans added a woman to the top of the ticket, and in the month where the McCain-Palin ticket gained 8 points among NC women, Dole dropped 4 points among NC women, from 46% to 42%. Much of Dole's increase comes from men, from voters over age 50, and from voters who earn more than $50K/year.

Would it be sexist to say that Palin may have apron strings instead of coat tails? :)

This is good news. I would like to see Palin come to NC to campaign with Mayor Pat. Unfortunately I doubt she would come to Mecklenburg County. Palin could provide substantial uplift to both of them, as Mayor Pat has a bit of the Maverick in him and Perdue is as dumb as a box of rocks and as dirty as Gov Easely.

VA, NC, TN, and KY have something in common: they usually go strongly Democrat for governor. It might even be easier to win the DE governorship had the Republicans run someone of substance.

Mayor Pat has an uphill battle against the downeast kleptocracy that sends on its Democrat governors to the state capital in Raleigh with relative ease. I agree and really never gave Mayor Pat much of a chance in NC.

However, Mayor Pat, if he plays it right, can wear the maverick mantel and perhaps get a healthy pull on McPalin coat/skirt tails.

I wish her husband felt more at east in the spotlight he could also campaign. With Todd, Cindy, and John and Sarah The whole ticket could hit a lot of local elections.

Mike Easley appointed Mike Nifong, refused to step in when Nifong targeted the innocent lacrosse players, and refused to ask the AG (they’re all Democrats, see) to investigate the Fong.

I’ll be voting the all-Scottish ticket: McCain and McCrory. Pat definitely has a shot at ending the Charlotte hex in statewide elections. Recent Charlotte Mayors Eddie Knox (D), Harvey Gantt (D), Sue Myrick (R), and Richard Vinroot (R) all tried Gubernatorial or U.S. Senate races (in the cases of Gantt and Vinroot, multiple attempts), and all failed.

Go Pat Go!!! I don’t think I can handle 4 more years of a Democrat Governor, particularly Bev Perdue. I think she’ll be worse than Mike Easley ever thought about being. She is nothing but a puppet of the teacher’s unions.

Too bad I missed it. I would have loved to hear Pat take Bev apart.
