Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain has gotten a jolt of support right where he wanted it - from the independent voters whom he courted so aggressively at last week's convention - and now holds a healthy lead over his Democratic rival, Sen. Barack Obama, in the chase for that key constituency.
A Gallup Poll to be released Tuesday shows that Mr. McCain's backing among independent voters jumped 12 percentage points in recent days, providing welcome news for a Republican candidate who has been torn between nurturing his maverick appeal to independents and trying to appease the party's conservative base...
...Compounding Mr. Obama's challenges, about 29 percent of former rival Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's backers - more than 5 million voters - say they will cast their ballots for Mr. McCain, according to pollster John Zogby.

yuk, yuk yuk!
The McCain camp's "Magic Numbers" are roughly:
92% GOP
18% RAT
45% Indie
If we can capture more than 45% of the Indies, or can motivate more of the GOP base to come out than what we initially predicted, we won't need as many RAT voters. Sarah Palin has helped tremendously on all fronts.
Gee, that’s what the famous ytube democratic Hillary supporter told Cavuto....about 5 million of them would vote mccain........
If any of these stats are true it is absolutely game over for Obama
29 percent Hillary supporters!?
If it is just 10 percent, BO loses.
The independent swithc will have a compound effect on polling.
Independents will now start identiying as Republicans. That will boost party identification for Republicans and change mixing formulas for polls toward the Republicans.
I wish we can get those Bob Barr and Ron Paul nuts on our side....
Anyone who needs proof that Sarah Palin has got the libs scared sh!tless need only do this little exercise:
Go to the DUmp:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/
Then use your broswer’s “Find” command to search for the word “Palin”. If you use Firefox, click the “Highlight All” button and sit back and admire the number of yellow boxes on the screen - over 30 of ‘em.
While it may not apply to the DUmp, remember the old adage “there’s no such thing as bad publicity, as long as they spell your name right”.
Independents and Hillary supporters are smelling the roses!
Independents, like uncommitted voters, tend to bounce around like rubber balls. Nothing to be read into it until the Nov. elections. ;-)
who does not believe that Hillary and Bill are absolutely enjoying watch the Obama camaign implode?
They clearly want this to happen.
Hillary is absolutely refusing to pull the trigger on Palin and strongly implies that women can vote for Palin.
Rendell needs to deleiver PA to McCain.
fantastic!
Wait, wait - according to Axelrod and Carville, these people don't exist. There are no HIllary voters who won't vote for Obambi. [sarcasm]
Actually, I've browsed some PUMA blogs - there are THOUSANDS of them who will vote for McCain rather than the Obambi.
It is not game over.
You have to understand what a winning campaign means. It means you are set for life. If you are a senior campaign staffer and you win, you’re going to assistant secretary of commerce for whatever specialty for two or three years and from there you will be hired as either a lobbyist at $450,000/yr or a VP for some relevant company at $450,000/yr plus stock options.
That’s what victory means to a campaign staff. They will be set FOR LIFE.
And so . . . they aren’t going to let it happen. Dumping Biden and getting Hillary will happen or not happen depending on one thing and one thing only . . . do the internal polls show it helps.
Principle means nothing. It’s a lifetime of luxury if you win vs . . . looking for work in a cubicle. McCain must NOT build a big lead. A small lead lets them imagine they should not take the Hillary risk.
PINGALINGADINGDONG!
Yeah. The Rats are such in a state of denial about this. They’re such idiots. They think there’s no way that Hillary voters will go elsewhere.
As you said, all we need is a decent percentage of them, and that will be huge for McCain.
at the very least, that he not try to go all out for Obama
You sound like you know what you are talking about but seriously, if Obama dumps Biden when he’s already clearly behind couldn’t he lose both houses for the D’s?
The campaign must proceed as if Hussein is up by 15 points. We need every toss-up state and we need to work to turn blue leaning states into red states.
