The Alaska Democratic Party pulled this page from their site, but luckily Google has it cached - it states "the State of Alaska officially abandoned" the "Bridge to Nowhere, basically crediting Sarah Palin with killing it!

Funny how the page just happened to disappear!

Gee, I wonder if Axelrod’s agents did this. Or was it NBC?

The owner of the cached article can fill out a request with Google and they’ll purge it - takes a few hours, to a day - then it will no longer be searchable or viewable. It’s best to save the web page locally first. If you’re using the MS IE browser, on the tool bar, select File, Save As, then choose the MHT format. This packages all the graphics, icons, text, etc. into a single file.

I was thinking the same. Obama is going after McCain for ‘change’. He’s attacking Palin on various fronts. I think McCain and Palin need to just keep on keeping on. Ignore Barak. Obama is on defense right now and keep him there. Keep reminding people of his lack of executive experience.

Remind people of Ayres. Speaking which, why did FOX run that show on the Keating 5 last night?

well, as was posted earlier, it still exists (for now)
http://www.retireted.com/category/real-estate/gravina-bridge/

so I was mistaken in saying they removed the page, though the fact remains the Democrats are crediting her for getting rid of the bridge.

Yikes it is 1984.

Perhaps we need a smithsonian style “save it all” archiving.

RATS Ideology of Hate ... If you don’t like History.... Remove it and change it and act like it never existed... That has got to be the number one thing I hate about Liberals they disregard historical fact and keep going with their bloviated talking points.

Gravina Island Bridge

Ted Earmarked Funds for Bridge that Goes Nowhere

  • Stevens championed proposed bridge near Ketchikan that became national symbol of wasteful spending
  • Sen. Murkowski’s family would benefit personally from the bridge
  • State of Alaska killed bridge

The proposed Gravina Island Bridge, also known as the “Bridge to Nowhere,” became a national symbol of wasteful congressional spending and driver of earmark reform.  On Sept. 21, 2007, the State of Alaska officially abandoned the controversial project.

The Gravina Island Bridge initially received $223 million in 2005 via earmarks by Alaska Senators Ted Stevens and Lisa Murkowski. The bridge would have connected Ketchikan, Alaska with its local airport on nearby Gravina Island (population 50). Congress stripped the earmark after a national uproar about it but appropriated the money anyway for unspecified transportation uses. Former Gov. Frank Murkowski’s administration set aside about $113 million of the appropriation for the Ketchikan bridge. However, Gov. Sarah Palin said the $398 million bridge was $329 million short of full funding, and only $36 million in federal funds were set aside for it. She said it was clear Congress had little interest in spending any more money for it and that the state had higher priorities.

On Oct. 20, 2005, Ted threatened to resign from the Senate if lawmakers took away money allocated for the Gravina Island Bridge and the Knik Arm Bridge and redirected it to Hurricane Katrina repairs in Louisiana. The attempt to redirect the bridge money was defeated, but Congress later removed the earmarks after intense public criticism.

If the bridge were built, the family of Sen. Lisa Murkowski would benefit. Murkowski’s mother Nancy, wife of former Gov. Frank Murkowski, is co-owner with her three siblings of a 35-acre parcel of land on Gravina Island. The plot is valued at $245,000 and is within a mile of the bridge’s western end. While critics charge that the bridge would increase the value of their property, the Murkowski family has taken umbrage at any suggestion of impropriety. Murkowski called her family’s undeveloped Gravina parcel “a worthless piece of property.”

What's the connection?

Earmarks

  • Ted’s earmarking becomes "poster child" for national reform
  • Ted’s earmarks benefit close associates
  • Ted’s earmarks draw scrutiny

Political “pork” has become synonymous with congressional earmarks, a mechanism used by members of Congress to direct federal dollars to specific projects. Earmarks are criticized because, by their nature, they encourage cronyism, corruption and abuse, and because they destroy merit-based or competitive allocation of public funds.

Earmarks have become a national issue, with Ted Stevens and Don Young as their key promoters. Stevens and Young continue to defend the practice despite mounting national anger. The infamous Bridges to Nowhere caused grief and criticism for Congressmen nationwide, and added momentum to the movement for earmark reform.

Alaska’s delegation caused a national uproar for earmarking $452 million for two expensive bridges near Ketchikan and Anchorage; the amount appropriated would cover only part of the costs. Gov. Palin recently cancelled the Gravina Island Bridge near Ketchikan that would have connected the Alaska mainland with Gravina Island (population: 50). The other bridge, named Don Young’s Way and also known as the Knik Arm Bridge, is a proposed two-mile span that would cross Cook Inlet’s Knik Arm and connect Anchorage with undeveloped land in the Mat-Su Borough. Ted’s current chief of staff and former top aides are among those who own land that would benefit from construction of the bridge.

New information about Ted’s earmarks continues to surface and draw scrutiny. The Anchorage Daily News reported Sept. 30, 2007 about a $3 million earmark Ted directed to his personal friend Bob Penney. State officials were puzzled by a line buried in a 2004 appropriations bill: "$2 million is for the Kenai River; $1 million for the Russian River."
When they asked Stevens to clarify what the money was for, his office replied in an email: "The $2 million for the Kenai River; and $1 million for the Russian River go to Bob Penny [sic]." Penney co-founded and helps direct the non-profit Kenai River Sportsfishing Association, which, working with the Department of Fish and Game, determined how the money was spent, the Daily News reported.
Other questionable earmarks by Ted include appropriations to the Alaska Fisheries Marketing Board, the Seward SeaLife Center, and for a pipeline project sponsored by Enstar.

she may have security clearances we don't even know about.

Isn't that the whole point? It is not necessary for Gov. Palin to have clearance for the intricate details of the 49th Missile Defense Battalion's mission in order for her to serve as the Alaska National Guard's commander in chief. Foreign intelligence and counter-terrorism information usually has a TS-Code Word classification and some governors (and senators) are cleared for this level of information.

It's nobody's F'in business what she may or may not be cleared for.

They really are getting desperate aren’t they?

What’s perhaps saddest about all of this is that Sarah Palin - with ANY letter after her name - is a better representative for the PEOPLE than any Democrat (or Republican, for that matter) could really hope to be. And these democrats KNOW it. However, they are more interested in promoting their party, and their communist agenda than really looking out for the people they claim to represent.

Just a possibility — it could be that after Hannity pointed it out on air that they “re-published” it. Depending on the CMS they are using it could’ve just been an easy tick and click in their admin screen to put it back up.

I understand what you are saying, however I think that pointing out that Sarah may indeed have security clearance credentials may be a good thing... On the contrary I seriously doubt that Obama could pass the same scrutiny - and he is going to have TOP SECRET access presumably if he becomes President.

Is there a way to point this out to the average American — why Obama wouldn’t pass a background check, and that Palin presumably already has?

I would agree, since the link in google cache does NOT work. They must have put it back on but on a different page.

This is Google’s cache of http://www.retireted.com/real-estate/gravina-bridge/ted-earmarked-funds-for-bridge-that-goes-nowhere/. It is a snapshot of the page as it appeared on 4 Sep 2008 20:08:03 GMT. The current page could have changed in the meantime. Learn more

Ahhh... very interesting. [Just FYI - I’ve saved on my hard-drive all the links you’ve put up as I know you’ve already done as well.] It makes me laugh when they try this stuff. So easy in today’s day and age of Google to bust them! Gotta love it. :-)

I used to evaluate medical histories of USAF members for security clearances and access to nuclear weapons. Obama has soooo many disqualifying defects, it’s comical to even suggest that he could qualify. An admitted history of even experimental cocaine use, was an absolute disqualification.
