Hurricane Ike is the fifth tropical cyclone of the 2008 hurricane season to threaten U.S. Gulf Coast states.
Reports from Turks & Caicos Islands describe 80 per cent of homes damaged or destroyed. On Sunday, Hurricane Ike's position just north of Hispanola was hampering relief efforts for devastation incurred by Hurricane Gustav and Tropical Storm Fay. The death toll in Haiti from Gustav reached 200 people.
Florida Governor Charlie Crist held a press conference Sunday morning shortly after a Hurricane Watch was issued for the Florida Keys.

Maybe, just maybe the main part of the storm will wind up hitting Mexico and missing Texas. If that happens, in terms of the US, it will be the luckiest miss ever.
Think that’s a little too tight on the scheduling.
Thursday maybe.
Is that Corpus I’m lookin’ at ?...
Our biggest problem in E TX is the trees--they don't mix with high winds or tornadoes.
I talked to our emergency guy today and he said their biggest worry if it was coming into Galveston and Houston, we would be on our own because all resources would be going there. We would be on the dirty side like we were for Rita...which did a number on us...and we're inland!!
I think I want to move to Alaska!
It normally snows in Alaska!
I would probably run from a moose, too!
These things tend to curve right before landfall. A Mexico hit would not be good here.

IKE seems to keep movin’(track)more to the south than the
Forecasts kept sayin’,,,(JMHO),,,
NOAA Floater - Visible Loop shows it tracking due west as I see it,,,(21.8?N)
Hit the forecast point west bound,,,not WNW-NW as the next
point shows,,,
That 5 day track mite shift more south(west)yet...
I’m totally surprised that you still have
power .. WOW. I worked at Ocean Reef
Club for almost 14 years, lived in South
Dade, north of Homestead, so I know how
frail the power issues can be in Keys, at
least back in the 80’s and early 90’s.
I bet the partying conchs in Key West
have felt a few a sobering moments
tonight.
Just a hit and run post - looked at the models just before hitting the hay - what continues to strike me is how the UKMET model has hardly strayed from it’s predicted track for several days now. If my recollection is accurate (and that’s all I’m going on here) it was pretty much alone in bringing this toward S.Texas three-four days ago, it was a very lonely blue line a couple times, and it is still showing pretty much the same blasted track.
I’ve got to admire it’s implacable nature, at least for this storm.
(Also noting how CLP5 keeps wanting to swing Ike north well before the others - also alone - but continued adjusting westward)
Five-story high waves smashed into Baracoa in Cuba as Hurricane Ike struck
I’ve wondered, is there such a thing as an anti-surge? When Ike exits to the West of Cuba, does the tide get thrown out, like it gets thrown in on the Eastern entry?
Does the theoretical pushed-back tide then come back in big waves?
I heard earlier this evening on the radio that Ike
is likely bound for our Texas coast.
Oh, boy!
Hurricane Goose-Step passed just to the east of us
here in the Dallas area and we got some fair winds
(40 mph-ish) outta that.
Sure hope we get a little rain, but don’t need a
Texas Frog Choker at this point. :)
It looks like I may be directly in the path of this one!!
I ended up with and 8000 Watt one. I think we will be fine with that. I just have to hunt up gas cans tomorrow. They are all sold out already.
Yup, that might be a chore, try local hardware stores and wallmart. That new one on beltway 8 and wilson road. Go early if you can. I got 14 cans here at the house I have aquired over the years. That 8K will run quite a bit, also get heavy duty extension cords, at least 14 gauge for 2 appliances and preferably a 12 for more than that. I use 14 indoor/outdoor in the 4 outlets and it does fine. Be safe and hope you won’t have to use it. But, it gives one peace of mind to know you have it.
You know about ventilation with them, don’t you? I have a CM monitor I use when ours is on.
