Hurricane Ike Live Thread
NOAA/NHC ^ | 7 September 2008 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 09/07/2008 8:37:37 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane Ike is the fifth tropical cyclone of the 2008 hurricane season to threaten U.S. Gulf Coast states.

Reports from Turks & Caicos Islands describe 80 per cent of homes damaged or destroyed. On Sunday, Hurricane Ike's position just north of Hispanola was hampering relief efforts for devastation incurred by Hurricane Gustav and Tropical Storm Fay. The death toll in Haiti from Gustav reached 200 people.

Florida Governor Charlie Crist held a press conference Sunday morning shortly after a Hurricane Watch was issued for the Florida Keys.

Is everyone in Houston going to NOLA to sit this one out? You people have been MORE than gracious taking in everyone from LA these past few months and years.

May God keep you all safe! I’ll take another 100 inches of snow this coming winter over these hurricanes!

I can't say for certain but I don't believe many would head that direction for shelter from a hurricane. I would hate to be stuck on I-10 in the middle of a storm and not able to get anywhere safe.

I was wondering how many permanently-displaced Katrina evacuees were still in Houston...

Praying it might weaken over Cuba and collapse considerably. They’ve been hard hit ..such a horrendous infrastructure for those poor, oppressed people. God be with them. And Raoul refused our help? Dearlord.

Take good care ......... ;) Seems like he’s been out there forever.

Lots of them are up here in Milwaukee, WI. We opened the buildings at our State Fair grounds to house them ‘lo those many years ago...and many never left. (The last figure I read was about 500 remaining here.)

Worked out perfectly for them, though...they fit right in with the ‘Hand-Out Harrys’ in Democrat-run Milwaukee proper. ;)

(Nothing against hard-working, employable folk from LA wanting a better life in Wisconsin; these people just wanted the same ‘lifestyle’ that they enjoyed down there, but without the flooding and the northern ‘Rats were MORE than willing to give it to them...in exchange for their votes, of course!)

Wow thanks Star lotsa great stuff there!

I am a bit more convinced now that it will go over Cuba more and maybe even a bit south for a period before the NW turn.

Just spoke with someone from the new NOAA center on White & United streets in Key West

he is confident that this is a non-event for the Keys

That opinion is either very good or very bad LOL

He's usually very reliable

He's confident that the storm will emerge from Cuba as a whipped puppy ..... he lives at 1800 Atlantic ... as far south as you can get and he and his family are going nowhere

.

Huh, I hadn’t expected to hear there were still 500 Katrina evacuees living on the state fairgrounds in Milwaukee, Wisconsin!

That’s what the weather gal on FOX just said- this may make it worse for the Keys...it’s hesitating a bit and make change track a bit.

:(

Sounds great... The Keys are so very vulnerable

A different topic - I probably should have put on this active thread, too - though it is off this topic -

CSPAN is broadcasting the 2006 Palin Gov.Debate - right now, and again at 9:30PM & 12:30AM ...

I’ll be watching it all three times.

There is an internet streaming link there, too.

It is very good - people may wish to see - I put up a thread here people may wish to look at:

I won’t take anything off the table at this point,,,

We’ll have to see how many forecast-points it misses in the

next few hours,,,

The next one on Floater - Visible Loop shows it to be

over land...
