Presidential candidate John McCain's acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention drew more television viewers than his rival Barack Obama attracted at the Democratic party's event last week, according to preliminary ratings from Nielsen Media Research.
Across all broadcast networks Thursday, Sen. McCains speech ended the night with a 4.8 rating/7 share, compared to Sen. Obamas 4.3/7 average, according to overnight numbers from metered households in 55 U.S. markets measured by Nielsen. These ratings are preliminary, however, and are subject to change.
NBCs coverage of Sen. McCains speech started directly at the tail end of the opening game of NFL season, with the speech pulling in a 6.3 rating/10 share, topping Sen. Obamas speech last week by 26%. That lead-in may have boosted audiences who last night turned out in droves to watch Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin introduce herself to the country.
ABCs showing of the McCain speech averaged a 4.5/7, down 2% from the same night of the Democratic convention last week, while CBS coverage took in a 3.4/5, an increase of 3%.
From the Hollywood Reporter (Sorry I work in La La land)
I’ll paraphrase:
Palin’s speech pulled in 37.2 million viewers for broadcast & TV viewers. 55% higher than Day 3 of the DNC (Biden’s and Clinton’s speech).
Up 99% from RNC’s 3rd day in 2004(18.7 mil) and also beat GWB’s acceptance speech in 2004 (27.6 mil)
Came close to upsetting Barry’s speech(38.4 mil), the most watched convention speech in convention history (my note: which mean Sarahcuda was the 2nd most watched in convention history)
The Palin speech also drew more female viewers than Hilda Beest’s last week.
LOL
That’s pretty much what Obama’s supporters say about anything or anyone that doesn’t support Obama.
And all this comes after their parents let them use the darkest room in their basements, put up with the funny smoke drifting up from their Obama viewing parties, and even spent a joyless night a long time ago as their hapless prom dates.
I'd ask if this is any way to show gratitude, but I take it that their parents are Typical White People.
What a week this has been!!!!
This is good, Obambi was Mr Popularity in the very beginning but NOW it is McCain at the end who is suddenly the star....better at the end, people are sick of Obama, he wore out his welcome, novelty over, and now the folks are ready for someone real-—I think the POW story was a great thing to show and talk about in the speech, I bet tons of people didn’t know the real story and I bet after seeing that people will decide to go with Mac.
In an AP story I read, the headline states, “McCain, Obama tied in TV Audiences.” If you read down a few paragraphs it says the GOP had more viewers the 3 nights than Obama and that McCain beat out Obama between their acceptance speeches. Why can’t the AP ever tell the truth? If the roles were reversed it would blare that Obama won the TV audience by.... It drives me nuts!
I don’t know and I don’t care. I didn’t watch O’Reilly because I think he stepped on the RNC convention time.
I have read several transcripts of his speech today and NOWHERE do I find the section where he says something about "vetoing any pork barrel bill that comes before me, and I will expose those who brought it and YOU WILL KNOW THEIR NAMES--YOU WILL KNOW THEIR NAMES!"
Did I have an auditory hallucination, or was that ad-libbed and left out of the "official" transcript? I remember it distinctly because he repeated the last part twice.
Thanks, FReepers!
Government of the people, by the people, for the people.
We rule ourselves, isn't that how it's supposed to work?
Who would you rather watch, an angry Marxist, or a remarkable American story of sacrifice and service?
This election is so McCain’s already.
Add in President Bush’s many potential October surprises such as victory in Iraq and/or Iranian smackdown and the 527 Obama swift boating (term used with affection) Obama doesn’t have a chance.
GOP Convention Most Watched Ever

Its like Sean Hannity says, 2008 marks the death of true journalism.
You must be an Austinite!
I think a good indicator that the base is ready to rock is the amount of money McCain is taking in. I didn’t like his speech at all, but it seems that he was trying to appeal to moderates and independents so we’ll see next week as you suggest how things have played out.
That’s true. McCain really wasn’t talking to us here on Thursday. He gave us and Sarah on Wednesday. Thursday was talking to the “moderates” and to undecideds - people concerned about America, not ideology. I could hardly stand most of Thursday myself, but he was not talking to me.
We’ll just have to see ... no matter what, though, he got the conservatives back into the Republican party last Friday - with two little five-letter words: Sarah Palin.
I think she has. And I said on friday that I thought the speech sucked. But I guess from looking at some of the polling data posted at FR the election is about tied. So the ticket is in good shape heading into the last 8 weeks. Palin is our anchor in the storm I guess while McCain goes after folks in blue states like PA and to some extent Ohio that are clinging to their guns and religion. Ohio has a dem governor so I’m calling it a blue state.
