'Dr. Phil' Chastises Letterman's Deriding of Palin's Bad Parenting
Newbusters ^ | 9-4-08 | Brent Baker

Guest “Dr. Phil” on Wednesday night chastised David Letterman's misunderstanding of teenage sexual behavior and parental influence after Letterman sarcastically complained that if a President McCain “drops dead...don't you want your President to have had the presence of mind to have chatted to her teenaged kids for five minutes about birth control?” (Letterman delivered the same belittling joke the night before too.)

Referring to Letterman's almost five-year-old son, daytime TV host Phil McGraw, aka “Dr. Phil,” informed Letterman:

Let me tell you something, new dad. If you are under the misapprehension that when Harry is 17 that you are going to have even a remote influence on what he decides in the back seat of a Chevy on a Saturday night -- I don't think old Dave's going to be popping in his mind at that point. It's not a 15-minute conversation. It's a dialogue that you need to have starting when he's about eight or nine.

Letterman was never funny to anybody but stoned college kids. I never knew anybody who liked him until some college stoner told me he and his buddies loved Letterman.

OK Dave why not ask Dr. Phil about “responsible parenting” of fathering a child at age 50?

Letterman is one of countless tv no-nos at my house. Did anyone observe how the studio audience reacted to what Dr. Phil wisely said?

I caught a little bit of Leno last night. Man, he’s gone off the deep end. He used to just be a little bit Left. Last night he was in the bag for Obama. Had to turn it off after about the 4th punchline.

The only thing that was ever good about David Letterman’s show was “The World’s Most Dangerous Band”....but even Paul Shaffer isn’t that funny any more.

Letterman is unimaginative and depressing.

I could write his crap. Just be as cynical as you possibly can. That's funny for a couple of one-liners, but that's all he's got.

Now THAT my Friend was must see T.V. I detested Andy Kaufman.
But yeah I was a stoner back then.

If you are up at late night watching Letterman, you must not have a job with much responsibility in the morning.

Dave has reverted to form...that’s all.

He’s famous, therefore, he’s smart.

Yeah, and he's RICH, therefore he's a liberal.

Uh, there was also the opening monologue joke that women love Sarah Palin so much the Secret Service had to “restrain Vice President Cheney’s lesbian daughter”.

I used to watch Johnny Carson back when these shows were funny. BTW what’s happened to Letterman’s nose?

Letterman stopped being funny around 1987...

Same here. When he moved to CBS, I tried watching but it was too much fluff. I enjoyed his crankiness when he was on NBC. But he's made some incredibly ignorant political statements over the last several years, so I have no desire to tune in to his show.

He should take Kid Rock's advice.

I remember the last time Letterman was funny . . . It was in the early 1980’s.

Bring down the media now!

Who cares what Letterman thinks.

..never could stand him. Thought I am not a fan of hers, Cher Bono accurately tagged him as a NY wise a$$ and for a good long time refused to appear on his show.

What does Dave think of the parenting skills of the millions of women each year that terminate their “inconvenient” pregnancy rather than take responsibility for their actions.

This family should be applauded for bringing this child into the world instead of killing it!
