Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, John McCain's surprise vice-presidential pick, is the subject of a legislative probe into claims that she abused her office by trying to get her former brother-in-law fired from his job as an Alaska state trooper.

A look at the Alaska governor and why she is a maverick VP choice.

Palin is likely to be deposed soon in the case, according to State Sen. Hollis French, who leads the state Senate's Legislative Counsel Committee.

French's committee unanimously authorized an investigation into the dismissal of the state's public safety commissioner, Walt Monegan, who claims he balked at pressure to remove Trooper Mike Wooten, who had an acrimonious divorce from Palin's sister.

The deposition of one of Gov. Sarah Palin's staff members was canceled yesterday by the staffer's attorney, in what is yet another setback to the state legislature's investigation into claims that Palin fired the public safety commissioner after he refused to dismiss a trooper, Palin's former brother in-law.

Palin has denied any wrongdoing surrounding the dismissal of Walt Monegan, but has acknowledged that phone calls were made by her staff members to Public Safety officials regarding the trooper, Mike Wooten.

One of those calls was made by Palin's director of boards and commissions, Frank Bailey. Bailey was scheduled to be deposed as part of the legislature's investigation, but his attorney canceled the deposition yesterday and challenged the legislature's jurisdiction, according to the state senator running the probe.

This is my IMHO on this. I would expect any polition that had influence to show concern over a state trooper that tasered an 11 year old and subsequently kept his job.

Does this mention that the ex brother in law was tasering the sister and kid?

Conduct unbecoming a dog catcher.

If I were McCain’s campaign staff, I’d suggest using the wife-abuse-cop angle in the campaign. See how the voters react.

“As for Wooten, McAlister maintains that her concern was justified, alleging, “He Tasered his 11-year-old stepson. He was observed drinking and getting into a squad car. And he illegally shot a moose, which doesn’t sound like much — but in Alaska, state troopers have wildlife authority.” “

this woman should be applauded for doing her utmost to get this clown off the street....suppose she didn’t and he killed someone drunk driving- who fast would the rats in the lib media cry “she did not connect the dots”???

The media being what it is, if Palin expressed no objections to the dirty trooper, the media would say “Palin turned blind eye to child abusing cop!”

Palin herself initiated the investigation?

She did not initiate the one taking place in the Alaska State Senate. The Governor formally requested the Alaska Personnel Board to conduct an ethics inquiry into the matter. She filed her own complaint in order to get them involved, and thereby make moot the senate's action.

It looks like this needs repeating here and elsewhere (ABC sure won’t). Governor Palin initiated this investigation. She’s got nothing to hide.

I’m wondering to what extent anything Palin or her staff are accused of would be illegal? The opinion that a suspended trooper making threats should be fired? Is that illegal? Curious that the trooper wasn’t fired, so we’re talking about zero effect.

McCain better get back after Obama, I don’t want the liberal scumbags taking over government and raising taxes, gutting the military etc, because we know how to take it but not dish it out. I want Obama deposed on why he launched his political career at the home of a terrorist bomber.
