Sarah Palin and the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle

Sarah Palin and the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle

There is a principle in quantum mechanics holding that increasing the accuracy of measurement of one observable quantity increases the uncertainty with which another conjugate quantity may be known.

In simpler terms, the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle states that you cannot make a measurement without affecting the results of the measurement. The mere fact you make the measurement influences the accuracy of the results. Some thinkers have elevated the uncertainty principle to the status of a philosophical principle, called the principle of indeterminacy.

How does this principle apply to Vice-Presidential candidate Governor Sarah Palin?

The mere fact that the measurement of Sarah Palin has begun will affect Sarah Palin. This is the inescapable fact of any measurement.

In the world of Metrology, which is the science that deals with measurement, they devise measurement methods that reduce the influence on the measurements in an effort to achieve the most accurate result. No such accuracy concerns apply to the measurement of Sarah Palin.

I can give you a current example. Barack Obama’s supporters have launched an attack on Sarah Palin’s family. Barack Obama has spoke up warning people to back away from attacks against Sarah Palin’s family. We can now measure Obama’s leadership abilities by observing how his supporters react. If Obama is the leader he claims to be the attacks against Palin’s family will cease immediately.

This would appear to be a measurement with no outside influences. However, the mere fact I suggested we observe the reaction of Obama’s supporters will influence Obama’s supporters’ reaction. We cannot know with certainty the extent of the influence but we can know with certainty that it will have an influence.

That is why you are on my "Schrodinger's Cat" Ping List.

You are also off it.

One can NOT judge Obama’a leadership effectiveness by observing whether the attacks on Palin cease.

Obama’s call for cessation of the attacks is motivated by one of the folowing conditions:

A. He is offended by the attacks and genuinely sees them as low class politics unworthy of his noble crusade for the presidency. In this case, his opposition to the attacks is sincere.

B. Obama sees the attacks as transparent, weak and futile. He is fearful the attacks will actually strengthen Palin and blow back negatively against his own campaign. In this case, his opposition to the attacks is sincere.

C. Obama wants the attacks to continue and wants Palin to be destroyed by these attacks. His call for the attacks to cease is nothing but a cynical ploy to deflect criticism against himself.

Since C is obviously the correct answer, then Obama’s effectiveness can best be measured by how the imact of the attacks plays out. Can Obama drive up Palin’s negatives without being perceived as the bad guy? With his cronies in the press running interference for him, it’s a possibility.

What is the sound of one million liberals crying?

What is the sound of one million liberals laughing?!

It's actually the conservatives who should be crying - at a "family values" candidate with a pregnant daughter. Instead, they're defending her AND the daughter! As society spirals ever downward.......

Little known fact:

If placed into Schroedinger’s experiment, both Sarah Palins remain alive.

Well, done!

This is a turning point in history. I wonder how many people will recognize that.

However, the mere fact I suggested we observe the reaction of Obama’s supporters will influence Obama’s supporters’ reaction.

That assumes they know you're measuring them.

Both perspectives are sound. The sad part is...one of them is true.

McCain/Palin 2008!!!

Little known fact: Sarah Palin will build her gas pipeline in record time when she invites the nation’s steelworkers to come to Alaska and lay some pipe.

Bussard Scoops in the Star Trek universe have Heisenberg compensators to deal with that tricky hydrogen.

They were also there in STNG. Voyager is where they were on the scoops. I also think the ST manual by Onkuda has them mentioned on Defiant.

That assumes they know you're measuring them.

They know now. however, I agree; a more stealthy observation would be more accurate.

So the real experiment is:

Point taken as it regards the media. I am observing the people.

Working in an electronics lab we always have to be cognizant of our electronic probes and how much their internal impedance affects the accuracy of the measurement.

Exactly my point when I stated they devise measurement methods that reduce the influence on the measurements.

In the lab, an engineer will go to great lengths, and expense, to obtain the results within the uncertainties his design can tolerate. On the layman’s level, we could compare measuring the tire pressure of your car’s tires. You make a measurement with a tire pressure gauge that has an inherent accuracy. However, that little pssst…you hear, as air escapes when you remove the gauge from the Schrader value means the true pressure is again unknown to you. This error is tolerable for a car’s tire pressure. Food for thought…there is a difference between accuracy and precision.

The effort to oppose Sarah Palin will go to no such lengths to assure accuracy. She will be on her own and we will observe how well she handles it.
