Most of my Chinese friends as is the case with many Americans, know very little about Governor Sarah Palin, John Mcain's choice for running mate in the 2008 Presidential Election. When they do learn more about her, there is one aspect of her life that will undoubtedly catch the attention of many people here. Earlier this year, Governor Palin gave birth to a baby boy despite the fact that doctors told her that he would have Down syndrome. Making the same choice in China is nearly unheard of. If a Chinese mother finds out that her unborn baby is afflicted with a deformity or other abnormality, it is standard procedure to have the baby aborted...

It’s called
PERVERSE INCENTIVES.
And these almost ALWAYS come from government.
I guess you forgot who won WW2, and the Cold War then.
Compassion, Morality, Resolve and the Ingenuity of Free People trump Cold Calculating Brutality any day of the week.
But without Resolve, Freedom is doomed.
I see you’ve been brainwashed by the leftist culture to believe that people (kids) are a burden and not an asset.
“nothing wrong with the one child policy”
well, except for the behaviors it incentivizes - and you know what I’m talking about.
That’s because the Chinese are allowed one shot at it. We accept our children for who they are, regardless of how few or how many we have, and regardless of what challenges they may be born with.
Results already noted by Beijing: (1.) big increase in number of rapes; (2.) big increase in sodomy.
Number of available wives for marriage-age men drastically decreasing.
Actually, Chinese people are allowed two shots at it if the first baby is disabled. That is apart of Chinese law and has been for a long time.
Hot wars are won through greater brutality against the brutal. WW2 was won with brutality, ingenuity and resolve. Bombing and nuking civilians is brutality but the only other choice was to be brutalized ourselves.
The Cold War was stopped in its tracks due to the threat of the greatest brutality imaginable. It was ‘won’ for now due to the slow collapse of a flawed economic system. The same people are still there and their new economic position is rapidly giving them more capability.
Even free people must be brutal at times to defend themselves. Or at least show that they are capable as in the Cold War.
Resolve in my case means doing what is necessary to win. It must allow to be Brutal if that is what is necessary to defeat Evil.
But it is not diametrically opposed to Compassion either. How we treated our enemies, and our own was a good counterpoint to the Soviets, and the Axis.
It is the strength of the Judeo-Christian foundations of Western Civilization, where even the “least” of us can make some of the greatest contributions to society.
For instance, what would the Chinese have done with Stephen Hawking?
lol.... You must be Chinese. I did not mean to imply that all Chinese were cold and inhuman in their belief in social engineering, but the incontrovertible fact is that the majority of Chinese do believe in social engineering. If they didn't they would not put up with it.
Social engineering causes misery and hardship every time it is tried. It always will. China's one child policy is causing and will cause millions to suffer needlessly for years to come.
All the aborted or abandoned little girls. The orphans, the single men with little chance to marry due to the shortage of women. The old people forced to fend for themselves if their only child dies. All so sad and so unnecessary.
The only resource that there is a shortage of in the universe is the human mind. Without the human mind all other resources are useless.
You are wrong. The Spartans were defeated by the Athenians, the first Democrats. The Nazis, very cold, calculating, ruthless, also defeated by the free world of democracies. The Soviets, likewise.
History would suggest that one cannot social engineer a society that is as strong and prosperous as a society of individuals free to pursue their own individual dreams. Centralized economies and social engineering don't work in the long run and are inefficient even in the short run.
Why would such a thought ever enter your mind? Approximately 46% of the earth's surface is undeveloped wilderness, comprising land areas and not including sea. You could fit the entire population of the world into Texas and the population density would still be less than that of New York City. The number of people is not the problem; totalitarian governments are the problem.
Cordially,
Ugh. Sparta won the Peloponnesian Wars and defeated Athens.
That's it, exactly.
Man was created to live in liberty and that's where he thrives.
Evil people tend to try to thwart this in order to glorify themselves.
For 9 out of the last 10 centuries, China had the world's biggest GDP. China is one of the world's oldest cultures. We underestimate them as a people and a nation at our own peril. The 19th and 20th centuries weren't a Golden Era for the Chinese, but that doesn't mean that they have always been less-advanced than the West.
And dont tell me its just because of Communism, they were a backward country even before the communists took over in 1949.
Much of the world was backwards at the end of WWII. China's development was stunted due to communism. The country is only now starting to recover.
True, but Athens recovered and, allied with Thebes, defeated Sparta in 371 BC permanently ending Spartan dominance and influence. Which form of government went on to survive and flourish, Athenian or Spartan?
That may or may not be true. The recent Olympics offered a glimpse into china that we don't generally see.
There were two distinct views. First was the social control and mass presentations where thousands it seemed acted in concert Rush went on and on about this nearly every day condemning not only the presentation , but the social force that developed it.
The second view was on the streets of Beijing and other cities. We saw well dressed, strangely believe it western dressed, smiling, busy folks going about their business. Gone were the dour faces and drab gray clothing. There was a bustle and a purpose. These people were Chicaps...... a new and prosperous constantly rising force. Chinese business doers. Chinese capitalists if you will.
The sheer numbers and weight of the Chicaps are slowly but surely taking over. When enough old men die, a peaceful takeover will have happened. It may not be an American three branch government with two legislative bodies, but it will be something that evolves as the Chinese people see fit. It may take another 25 or even 50 years but it will happen. The commnuist rule was but an insignificant downtick in Chinese history. It has taken a hundred years or so since the royal government failed. The Chinese don't know yet what manner of government will serve the vast country beat.
Pronouncing her last name?

No, just for most of the last 4 centuries. Sure they’re old, that’s the only reason they were ahead in the first place, they got off to a long head start, and yet still ended up way behind pack, what does that tell you?
“Much of the world was backwards at the end of WWII. China’s development was stunted due to communism. The country is only now starting to recover.”
I’m comparing them to the west. China’s development as stunted by Confucianism long before it was stunted by Communism.
The same people who think she should have killed Trig, criticize her for killing a moose!
