DENVER - Senator Barack Obama's acceptance speech last week seemed vastly different from the stands of this city's Invesco Stadium than it did to the 40 million who saw it on television. Melancholy hung like think smog over the reserved seats where I sat with Democratic Party staffers. The crowd, of course, cheered mechanically at the tag lines, flourished placards, and even rose for the obligatory wave around the stadium. But its mood was sour. The air carried the acrid smell of defeat, and the crowd took shallow breaths. Even the appearance of R&B great Stevie Wonder failed to get the blood pumping.
The speech itself dragged on for three-quarters of an hour. As David S Broder wrote in the Washington Post: "[Obama's] recital of a long list of domestic promises could have been delivered by any Democratic nominee from Walter Mondale to John Kerry. There was no theme music to the speech and really no phrase or sentence that is likely to linger in the memory of any listener. The thing I never expected did in fact occur: Al Gore, the famously wooden former vice president, gave a more lively and convincing speech than Obama did."
On television, Obama's spectacle might have looked like The Ten Commandments, but inside the stadium it felt like Night of the Living Dead. The longer the candidate spoke, and the more money he promised to spend on alternative energy, preschool education, universal health care, and other components of the Democratic pinata, the lower the party professionals slouched into their seats. The professionals I sat with were Hillary Clinton people, to be sure, and had reason to sulk, for an Obama victory might do them little good in any event.

Maybe he should have given a positive and uplifting speech instead of the overwhelmingly negative speech that simply attacked, attacked, attacked.
Ha. Loser.
Correct. After you’ve heard the “evil rich white people must be killed and their stuff given to the oppressed peoples” speech for the Nth time, it gets very old.
So? Every one of the 80,000 people in the stadium was already voting for Obama, and will vote for him regardless. The target audience was the 40 million on TV.
This is a somewhat rambling and self-congratulatory article. However, “Spengler” is a sharp observer, so his prediction of a McCain/Palin landslide is welcome!
Landslide?!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’ve been really depressed these couple of days and even started smoking again because I’m really scared we might lose and never see Sarah Palin on the national stage again.
The truth is starting to smell and wake people up.
The longer the candidate spoke, and the more money he promised to spend on alternative energy, preschool education, universal health care, and other components of the Democratic pinata, the lower the party professionals slouched into their seats.
The Democrats were watching the brightest and most articulate presidential candidate they have fielded since John F Kennedy snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
How did Obama lose the election?
Easy. He had never won it. Beyond the media lapdogs and celebrawhores no one has cared a rats ass about Obama from the start. It has all been hype. Stun grenade- flash bang and then done.
The man has abosultely no substance. No accomplishments.
He offers change.. DUH its an election. The incumbent is not running. change happens whether you offer it or not.
If Obama loses this election and I pray to God he will, it will be because he is NOT qualified, he is BLATANTLY Un American, and in the end the people of this Nation will have seen through the smoke screens provided by the media.
They will vote for the best interest of their Nation and Obama can go back to Illinois and work on some other way to destroy America.
Just forget all the spots showing Obama in black and white, mournful music and horror flick announcer's voice. Feel free to remark on how badly the other side sees America, but then move on and show the America that makes us what we are.
Remember the Alaska Airlines commercial years ago, where the guy goes through first-class and it's all champaign and caviar, music and beautiful people. Then he steps into couch and the scene changes to a Calcutta street scene!
Play up the differing views of the two parties on America and tell them which America we get depends, after all is said and done, on them.

The moderate Democrats who constitute John McCain’s base. No conservative would ever actively support McCain. Oppose Obama, sure, but support a liberal scoundrel like McCain? Absolutely not.

[I’m confused. I thought George and Barry have the same father?]
They do. Barack Obama Sr. died when George was a baby. George’s mom remarried a French guy.
This line killed the whole story for me.
You obviously did not bother reading it - one of the best articles on Obama I have read since the start of the campaign.
Amen!
That thin resume has more executive experience than Obama, McCain and Biden combined!
Nation-building? Doubling down on the US commitment to Iraq? Isn't that trying to out-Bush the Bush administration, while Obama campaigned on getting out of Iraq and spending the money on programs at home? Unblinking, one of the soldiers said, "That's what we think Barack will do." They believed in a more expensive version of the administration's program, and faulted Bush for half measures - and somehow they believed that Obama really agreed with them, all the public evidence to the contrary. And they believed in Barack with perfect faith.
Amazing.

Interesting analysis, although I dispute his assertion that Obama is the most brilliant candidate ever. The guy is not particularly bright, as can be shown by his lack of achievements, but he is extremely aggressive and extremely self-centered. He’s turned his presidential run into what everything else becomes for him: an exercise in self-expression and self-aggrandizement through emotional manipulation and, when that doesn’t work, deviousness. This is what enables him to get ahead, even though he has absolutely no real accomplishments.
But Spengler does analyze the source of his attraction, which is that Obama is a sociopathic personality who can gain everybody’s confidence by somehow making them think he is speaking to them personally, on the same wave-length with them, regardless of his actual words. A sociopath has no core of being; all of his life is devoted to getting others to do his will simply because that is what makes him feel real. He is not subject to the rules of his society and has no inner moral or ethical restraints. But this is precisely the thing that makes sociopaths such effective con-men.
The person Obama has always made me think of is the main character in “Six Degrees of Separation.”
I did read it. All of it. Yes, it is devastating for Obama, but any praise of Palin to be found in it is of the backhanded variety.
