ST. PAUL -- The 17-year-old daughter of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is pregnant, Palin said on Monday in an announcement intended to knock down rumors by liberal bloggers that Palin faked her own pregnancy to cover up for her child.

I think you’re exactly right. We’ll be flooded with stories about how most poor women don’t have the advantages the Palin girl does. Lots of stories about welfare, day care, teen education, etc., all with the kicker that “the rich Republicans can’t understand the position of poor teen (minority) pregnant girls in the present welfare state.”

All may be true but I think Palin makes like 45K a yr as gov of alaska. lol. I make more as a programmer.

Dar Mrs. Palin,

I would like to congratulate you on the news of the upcoming arrival of your first grandchild. I’m certain that your daughter, with the loving support of her family, will manage to weather this storm and face her adult responsibilities with grace.

Babies are a blessing. Although I’ve encouraged my own teenage daughter to wait until marriage, in my heart I know that I can only control so much. I’ve already made the decision that early motherhood is not the worst thing that can happen to her. If she does “jump the shark” and produce a child before she’s financially and emotionally ready, I’ll be standing in the wings to help her in any way I can and she’ll know from that beginning that she doesn’t have to do this alone.

From a mother to a mother,
Marie

I don’t think it reflects well on Sarah’s moral compass. My 19 yr old has boys drooling over her but we have inculcated in her the need for boundaries. I’ve heard a lot about Palins values, but what about spiritual beliefs. Any threads on their religious practices and where they go to church?

Must be nice to have total control of your daughter's beliefs. Mine, as a teenager, swore she wouldn't get pregnant until she was at least 30, since we had our youngest when our older daughter was 12 and she saw how much work was involved. She said, "When you have a baby, YOUR life ends and all you do is care for the baby..."

And a couple of months before her 20th birthday, she got pregnant. Four years later, she would cheerfully tell any teenager to WAIT - but she is also a caring mother to her now 3 year old daughter.

FWIW - our daughter joined us in attending a Baptist church. I believe the Palins are Assembly of God people. If going to church would "inculcated in her the need for boundaries", church would be incredibly popular with fathers of teen age daughters!

"What would Obama do?"

Stick it in the linen closet

This will actually hurt the Dems.

Romney or Pawlenty would NEVER have brought the excitement that Sara has brought - nor the votes she will get. Bobby Jindal said flat out that he didn’t want the job.

I’m happy with Sara Palin - she is human, she is one of us, and she has problems that all of us can relate to.

No matter how negative someone wants to make this, it is not. The initial first reaction may be of surprise. First, as simple as it sounds, these things happen, it’s happened forever. It’s how we handle these situations that counts. Her daughter is handling this with responsibility and by being an example of her pro-life values. Maybe God will use her to be an encouragement to those in similar situations. The situation makes the Palin family even more identifiable to others. May God bless the Palin family richly, strongly, to stand up to adversity with grace. That they will never be ashamed of the beauty of life when it is given to them. Prayers for the McCain and Palin family.

Odd? It would've been completely inappropriate to announce Bristol's pregnancy on Friday. Today is idea timing it's a bank holiday and there's a hurricane hitting Louisiana.

This is just a blip as it should be. It's a family matter. Did we see breaking news headlines about Al Gore's son being arrested for drugs and speeding when Al was running for POTUS?

Bristol was right there, out front, and not hidden away in a closet. I briefly wondered if she was just overweight (in a family of fit people) in some of the photos but now I know she's pregnant.

This is how the Left will spin this.....that Sarah was too involved in politics to raise her daughter properly and attentively, that she still has fledgelings at home that should prompt her to be a stay-at-home mom, that a special needs baby needs a mother who isn't jetting around the country and the world as veep, that her "family values" persona is a sham, that.......

I guess they really do want to lose the vote of all women. If they did this it would really make them look bad.

What Obama should do is immediate make statement to the effect that this personal family matter does not belong in the campaign and that he will fire anyone on the campaign that makes an issue of it. And then congratulate the daughter on her upcoming blessed event. He won't but he should.

McCain isn’t a preacher. He’s running for POTUS and leader of the free world.

This will significantly undermine McCain’s campaign effort.

I thought it was simply a lousy vetting process. Instead, its a major blunder by McCain. WOW!

That's good Mr. Silverback. I already heard some joker on my local radio station joking (hopefully) that all Sarah Palin has to do now is to encourage her daughter to abort the baby and millions of Democrats will cross party lines to vote for McCain/Palin, and both mother and daughter will become cultural heroes to every liberal and leftist in America.

Unfortunately, every word you say is true. The fact that she refuses to abort her baby will not help her mother with lib women. Too bad.

What does this really change? Nothing.

” Let him who is without sin cast the first stone”
It is the babies future is what is important.

I have a great-grandaughter born out of wedlock and she could not be loved more by her parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents.

Give her a shot of birth control that last for 6 months.

Have an IUD that last for 5 years.

being on the pill is common sense for most of us

i realize Catholics have doctrine issues on this and that’s their prerogative

however...teenaged girls forget to take something so simple

It look s like the Palin family is doing the right thing and yes McCain knew.

I have a cousin whose mom was pregger when they married.

My ex-wife was preggers when we married, that daughter is here with me in college now.

One cousin of mine had two teenaged pregnancies in their family. Both girls had the babies of course....one married. The other they are raising it.

I would guess at least 15-20% of attractive teenaged girls get pregnant in our culture. We all wish it weren’t happening everywhere but it is and the crucible is how folks deal with it.

This could be an opportunity to show folks who choose to kill the child how decent folks deal with this when it occurs.

One moment people are praising her family and family values, then her 17 year old turns up unmarried and pregnant.

Let's start with the basics.

The baby isn't being born into the Obama family, so there is a very small chance that it will have scissors inserted in its skull when it's being delivered.
