ST. PAUL -- The 17-year-old daughter of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is pregnant, Palin said on Monday in an announcement intended to knock down rumors by liberal bloggers that Palin faked her own pregnancy to cover up for her child.

If Palin can survive this election, I think she can handle running the White House. And her husband is a remarkable fellow too. I don’t think he’d sit idly by if she asked him for help. This is no ordinary election. It’s probably the most horrific race in the history of the Free World.

First, the parents that adopt already have the means to afford a baby.

Second, the parents are already married and chose to be married probably because they loved each other.

Third, the divorce rate for young married couples is extremely high. I know it is way over 50%, and it may be as high as 75%. Teenagers that get married have so many obstacles against them.

Some young married couples that have to get married do make it, but way to many don’t. There are way to many single parents in this country, and we need to encourage young girls to put their babies up for adoption. It is the best thing for the baby. It should be about what is best for the child.

To me it is NOT OK for a teen to have sex and get pregnant. Parents are responsible. The Palins should go back to Alaska and work on family values.

i knew people like you existed... Dana Carvey had to have someone to inspire his Church Lady schtick...

Thanks for the ping.

If that happened and Palin did step aside, I wouldn't be disappointed. Several FReepers including myself called for Palin to step down earlier today on this thread. Example at post #337. The malcontents didn't like such bold talk for even suggesting such a thing actually take place. I still remain more ticked off at McCain for holding back vital information about his running mate. Palin has huge responsibilities that require she be at home as often as possible. Lets hope the Palin choice doesn't quickly turn sour, damaging McCain's chances of winning even more.

Exactly! Any baby is a blessing. She's keeping her baby and it will be loved, just like your granddaughter. Would you have liked your daughter to have done things differently? (not getting pregnant), sure, but she did and once it happened you dealt with it.

I am sure both of them are lovely.

McCain should have let it be known that the daughter was pregnant...l or 2 weeks before deciding on a VP. That would have given time for a proper spin attempt.

If it was not well recieved then he could have moved on to another, the Gov of La. Bobby Jindal would have been a possibility.... Instead McCain/Palin decided on hiding it from the American People. Why? If its no big thing, why hide it?

Surely arguments could have been made to defend the things this Conservative movement believes in.... much as has been seen on this thread.

“To me it is NOT OK for a teen to have sex and get pregnant. Parents are responsible.”

I hope the Lord shows you more mercy at your particular judgment. Nobody argued that it's “OK for a teen to have sex and get pregnant.” Perhaps you should spend a little less time in the hot sun and contemplate your faith

“A parent can not control everything a child does when the child is not in their presence.”

Umm thats kind of the point for those of us who have qualms about a mother of 5 young kids running for VP. This incident isn’t providing much comfort.

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight! Sarah said Bristol and Levi. I feel sorry for both of these kids. Love at their age is very real and this is no way to start a family. I just hope that his parents are able to cope as well as her parents are.

I pray this goes away soon.

My family published a book of our ancestors. My greatgrandparents were married in 1869. Their first child was born 6 monthes later. They had 15 children and some of the girls were pregnant when they got married so this is not new or unique. I come from a very good family. Salt of the earth sort of people but evidently they still got pregnant before marriage even back in the 1800’s.

Listen - no person in this world is perfect. Put enough scrutiny on anyone and you can find some mistakes. In this case the best that the media and the KOS devils can come up with is a mistake that Sarah’s underage daughter made. The media will try to blow it out of proportion becuase they want to destroy any Christian conservative in politics. However, how dare we join in their witchhunt. We need to be rallying around Sarah and telling the liberal media and the Kos fanatics to go take a flying leap in the Bering Sea.

The fact is parents can raise there kids with all the right values and principles. But people will always make mistakes that go against there values and what they were taught by there parents. NOBODY is perfect that young lady is not perfect, Palin is not perfect and the past great President Reagan was not perfect. We all make terrible mistakes that go against our values. This has no bearing on Palins judgment and leadership as a conservative. If this made you change your mind about Palin then you will never be happy with any leader.

Oh come on, kenth. The conservatives have made this an issue, through Family Values, “abstinence education,” gay marriage, abortion and a whole host of “personal” matters that have become quite public concerns subject to federal and state legislation and funding through quite concerted efforts on the part of the right. It’s not fair or honest to say to the American people that sex, love, marriage, divorce, reproduction and kinship are “personal matters” instead of “issues” when your own party stands to lose through the application of the standards to which you’ve held others.

“What kind of conservative attempts to think for a person, make personal decisions for a person or decide what’s best for another person’s family, then attempts to persuade other people of the correctness of her opinion?”

Rush Limbaugh? Jerry Falwell? Newt Gingrich?

Hi all, I’ve just come over from the Guardian to post a question - an honest one, no intent to troll. Someone there (a quite conservative poster) has suggested that McCain’s selection of Sarah Palin for VP candidate was a calculated one based upon Bristol’s pregnancy in a bid to gain the pro-life vote.

With both McCain and Palin being Pro-Life they already have the vast majority of Pro-Lifers in their camp, so I don't see that as a possiblity.

“Palin has huge responsibilities that require she be at home as often as possible.”

That would make you feel so much more comfortable with yourself, would it not. The little woman steps aside for an “experienced” man, for the sake of Reagan Man's fragile psyche and self esteem. Perhaps feminists have been right about conservatives after all.

And who do you have in mind that is better to replace her with? I sure didn’t see anyone. And if any of them...men...had a pregnant daughter, no one would even notice.

She’s the best thing McCain ever thought of. I don’t know why, but he appears to have gone in the right direction on this.

Everyone has a personal life and their are frequently big things going on their. However, it is very sexist to assume that Sarah can’t seperate her personal and professional life any more than Ronald Reagan or any other President who had a family. Some of Reagan’s kids made poor choices with their lives but do you feel that those distractions meant that he was not capable of serving as president.
