McCain: I May Postpone Convention (Due to hurricane)
politico.com ^ | August 30, 2008 | Mike Allen

John McCain said the Republican National Convention may be postponed as federal officials said Hurricane Gustav was gathering to a devastating Category 5 as it headed toward star-crossed New Orleans.

“It just wouldn't be appropriate to have a festive occasion while a near-tragedy or a terrible challenge is presented in the form of a natural disaster,” McCain told Chris Wallace of “Fox News Sunday,” in an interview taped for tomorrow. “So we're monitoring it from day to day and I'm saying a few prayers, too.”

McCain also said: “I'm afraid, Chris, that we may have to look at that situation and we'll try to monitor it. I've been talking to Govs. Jindal, Barbour, Riley. Chris, I've been talking to all of them.”

Officials at the convention, which is to open Monday in St. Paul, Minn., tell Politico they are figuring out how to handle the formal business of nominating McCain even if some delegations are not able to attend.

McCain is right.

If there is any reasonable chance that a strong hurricane is going to hit the U.S. it would be politically damaging to proceed.

OK, I agree that that would be the expedient thing to do, but then you’d have to take firm control of following events and pre-empt media BS. Showcase Federal reaction and contrast the RAT corruption at every opportunity. Heck, what good is the Executive branch if the Feds can’t fry local corruption on projects involving federal monies? For my money, Nagin and Blanco should be serving time and the only reason they aren’t is because of pubbie spinelessness in dealing with entrenched RATs.

I live on the MS gulf coast, I could care less if they hold the event or not (with good reason). Speaking of a National Disater, check the border chock full of human biological weapons entering the USA every day.

Which is worse, a hurricane or millions of illegals infesting America ?

(Some of those illegals speak Arabic and want us dead.)

If the RNC is clever, they can use this to their advantage.

Why not send all the delegates et al down to NOLA to help out? Skip all the unimportant speeches and do the nomination vote from ground zero in NOLA. Mac and Palin can do speeches from there.

What a contrast. The Dems have an American Idol convention and the Republicans have a “working” convention, actually helping those in need, while the Dems only talk about it.

Agreed. We’re behind McCain. We don’t need a coronation. There would probably be a media blackout. What hurricane?

I'm basically with you on this. What does a hurricane have to do with a convention? Those people in MN have been sent there by us voters to do a job. The Governors of MS, LA, and TX are responsible along with local and city and county/parish officials. They should stay home and do their job. This is not a federal responsibility. Having said that, Nobody in MN will be from the Fed anyway. Bush and Cheney can broadcast their messages from DC. We can show the country how this really is supposed to work. The fact that all 3 states have Repub Govs (and good ones) can work in our favor. Plus we have the only Governor on the ballot who can reinforce that approach.

Why do conservatives continue to cave to the MSM?

Maybe Palin can send a contingent of the Alaskan National Guard complete with moose patties.

I totally agree.

In the event of a bad hurricane, press coverage of the convention would be less, and the dems, along with their friends in the media will raise hell about republicans partying in St. Paul, while people are suffering from a storm.

I thought the republican convention was too close to the dem convention anyway. Postpone it, and have it in a couple of weeks. They will get a little larger, and more meaningful bounce.

Postpone it, and have it in a couple of weeks.

And hold it where? You think the convention center up in St. Paul just lies around empty 51 weeks out of the year? This convention has been over a year in the planning. You don't postpone. Cancel, yes. Postpone, no.

The danger of the hurricane to McCain is not so much where it hits but when it hits. Certainly, there should be concern for everyone.

However, a big hurricane blowing in is just the reason the network media would use as an excuse NOT to cover the Republican Convention.

McCain is very wise.

AND hadn’t Pelosi planned to call them back to vote when the RNC convention has started so they would be out of town for it??? I thought I read a post of that last week.

Postponing would be great !!! This could give Gov. Palin another week in the news, and totally shut out O-man.

Turn it into a Convention/Hurrican Telethon. I’m sure Palin could handle the MC duties as a former broadcaster. It would be a 9th inning, game-winning, grand slam.
