CNN reports that the RNC Convention will turn into a telethon and a community service outlet for 4 days if Hurricane Gustav destroys cities along the gulf coast.
McCain campaign is presently going over options. He refuses to have the convention be a party atmosphere during time of tragedy and crisis CNN Reports.
Developing...
Oh, and by the way. Statisically Pensacola Florida has the highest average of tropical storm landfalls on the gulf coast.
As with N.O. being hit 2 times now during the planned “Southern Decadence Festival” Pensacola plays host to it’s own gay pride pukefest either weekend before or memorial day weekend. So you may wanna avoid it there at that time too.
GEEEEEZ! I’ve read a bunch of the posts so far and am really shocked at my FR associates.
If the RNC goes on with the convention format, jubilation, speeches, flag waving, parties, the usual, and etc. the RNC will be opening themselves up to all the wrath the Socialist/Democrats can dream up regarding insensitivity to the misery of the common folk in the hard hit hurricane locations.
YOU KNOW THEY WILL.
It’s a no brainer that the RNC should be, must be the Political Party that raises the conciousness of all towards the aid and assistance of our National Community in times of crisis such as that which is forthcoming this week in the form of Hurricane Gustav.
I applaud the decision by the RNC and McCain to focus attention on this potential tragedy. It’s more important than the convention.
The Campaign will go on successfully without the convention regardless.
“H”, there’s been enough talk about how useless the Conventions have become in our modern Political scene anyway.
ST PAUL, Minnesota (AFP) - Republican White House candidate John McCain said in an interview Saturday that his party may have to suspend its nominating convention next week because of Hurricane Gustav.
McCain was asked whether the convention which begins on Monday in Minnesota may have to be suspended over the hurricane in an interview to be broadcast in full on Fox News Sunday.
“We may have to look at that situation and try and monitor,” McCain said.
“It wouldn’t be appropriate to have a festive occasion while a near tragedy or a terrible challenge is presented in the form of a national disaster.
“So we’re monitoring it from day-to-day and I’m saying a few prayers, too.”
DITTO.
I hope Hanna stays away for your sake and the rest of the flood areas.
I don’t see where the RNC has any choice. This is a well thought out back-up plan, imo.
I say live and let live, but my perception of the liberal gay community, is that they’re militant, in your face. Why can’t a person that is gay do so, dare I say it, normally. I’m strait, I’m proud but who the heck cares. Just leave me alone and let me do my shopping. I know I’m great looking, but please, show some self-control.
Because he knows he's not really The One, he just plays the part for a dumbsh!t TV audience.
I hope they don’t donate to the red cross. (remember the 9/11 money?)
or a token amount and place the bulk in more reputable charities.
I think the title of the thread needs to be changed — this gives the FALSE impression that the decision was made, which is not so.
Here is the actual article from CNN — the Republicans are CONSIDERING options, and this is one option. NO decision has been made to do this.
Gustav prompts talk of altering RNC agenda

“A senior McCain source said Saturday that officials are CONSIDERING turning the convention into a service event, a massive telethon to raise money for the Red Cross and other agencies to help with the hurricane.
McCain had suggested to a Fox News interviewer that the convention COULD be suspended if it seemed that a festive gathering was inappropriate in light of the destruction the storm may bring.
The hardest DECISIONS, like whether to cancel a day or two of the four-day gathering or to or condense days, WILL BE MADE AT THE LAST SECOND, GOP officials said. But the logistics of those decisions are being discussed.”
In a crisis the best of america is laid bare in deeds.
The worst of the democrats is exposed.
(they are still trying to figure out what USA stands for)
Exactly. Conventions are a glorified business meeting, IMHO. (Never been to a major party one, but I did attend an LP convention almost a decade ago.)
IMO 50 to 100 miles.
LOL
I know, fallout, fall out. Just curious.
I wonder if the heat would make it worse , or whether the energy burst would tear the storm apart.
Thats not a good way for the Crimson Tide to start out this year.....
Don’t worry, I’ve been thoroughly chastised!
How would one postpone a convention — are you going to kick out all the people who’ve reserved hotel rooms in the next week? Are you going to make all the compaines, etc... cancel whatever is planned for the convention “hall” for whatever time period you want to “reschedule” it for. We’re talking about a multi-million dollar event that involved HUNDREDS if not THOUSANDS of people, vendors, etc... etc... And you want them to “change the dates” 48 hours in advance??? Sure... I wouldn’t suggest a career change for you to one as an event planner.
Exactly. McCain got his bounce on selecting Palin. He'd be denying the MSM too.
They could have another convention in three weeks also if the chose the right city, like Dallas/Houston.
The McCain campaign is working well like a military organization. I don't think they actually need to have a convention.
Great contrast to the Democratic “celebrity party” - - - it may start a new trend! Maybe Sarah Palin can be dispatched to the Gulf Coast with the Alaska National Guard troops under her command!
