BERWICK, Maine — Andrea Burns' Route 9 neighbor watched a woman pull up to Burns' home Thursday, pick up the family's 14-year-old cat, Pumpkin, from the front yard, put the cat in her back seat and drive away.

The whole incident was fairly quick, said the neighbor, who wishes to remain anonymous, but it has left the Burns family with a lasting sadness in wake of their cat's theft.

One of the many reasons my cats have been and always will be indoors only. Who knows Pumpkin’s fate? Animal testing? A Pit Bull’s chew toy? Animal sacrifice? Chinese food? I would be having nightmares if something like this happened to one of mine.

Who would want a car in the house all the time? They were born to hunt vermin.

LOL, keep your stupid house cat in your house. End of problem.

You think its funny someone's beloved pet was stolen and now likely faces torture and death?

I had a friend who did that once. Her cat got out and was gone about a day while she was driving all over town looking for him. She saw him sitting on someones porch and you know the rest. She discovered her mistake and took the cat back.

People who cannot take care of their animals should not have them. Then I would not need to pay the animal shelter to pick them up and kill them.

Yeah, but it's a real pain getting the blood out of the radiator grill.

I pray that she is returned safely.

A couple of years ago on one of the hottest days of the summer I got a phone call that I had gotten the job I had interviewed for but my new boss wouldn't accept my yes decision until I met him and he took me out to the office (located in the boonies on an Army base).

So I had less than 30 minutes to change clothes, do hair and makeup and meet him. To save a few minutes I put my love-beyond-words Scruffy (Corgi dog) out on my fenced in with key locked patio. I KNOW that lock was locked!

I came downstairs less than 10 minutes later and went to get him. The patio gate was WIDE open! My heart stopped!! I started screaming his name. Ran down the sidewalk (I live in a condo complex) screaming his name. Quickly ran to a neighbor 2 doors down and pounded on her door telling her to come help me. I was SCREAMING his name at the top of my lungs!!! I was on the verge of hysteria.

Thank God a couple of minutes later one of the lawn crew pulled around the building with Scruffy in his truck and gave him to me.

I never realized until then that the keyed locks that the major hardware stores sell can have a dual key. I started crying, locked Scruffy inside and went to see my new job location and officially accept the job.

On the way home I stopped and got a COMBINATION lock and put that on the gate along with the keyed one and both of them are still there.

I don't know if the grass crew had ulterior motives for taking him (medical labs buy dogs from sellers in my area or even worse had taken him as pit bull fodder). All I know is that I still have my Scruffy.

This dog means more to me than life. He IS my second child and when we have tornado weather here and I'm stuck at work I get frantic. I don't let Scruffy out for more than a few minutes at a time and check on him every few seconds when he is out there. When I put him on his leash I triple check to make sure the clasp is closed.

My Mom has told me that she hopes she isn't still alive when Scruffy dies cause I will be devastated. I've already decided that due to my age (51) he will be the last pet I will have as I don't have any close family or friends strong enough to walk him. (I once had a 120 male Rott that wasn't as strong as Scruffy when he digs his short legs into the ground.)

I've had a lot of hard times in my life but have also been blessed but this remains one of the worst things I've ever experienced. God help the person who should ever harm Scrufy......

I did something similar....years ago a girlfriend lost her black cat. There was a black cat i found a few blocks over...I swore it was that cat. Even got a cardboard box to transport it back. When I tried to be hero and show her the cat she screamed ‘thats not him’. So idiot here took the cat back to its rightful place where I found it.

Cat was on the owner’s property.

Perhaps you should keep your dog/spouse/child in your house at all times.

Anyone that equates a child to a dumb animal is sick. And we do have laws that will take your child away for neglect and such abuse.
