DATA FROM AN AIR FORCE RECONNAISSANCE AIRCRAFT INDICATE THAT GUSTAV CONTINUES TO RAPIDLY STRENGTHEN AND NOW HAS MAXIMUM WINDS NEAR 115 MPH...185 KM/HR WITH HIGHER GUSTS. THIS MAKES GUSTAV A DANGEROUS CATEGORY THREE HURRICANE ON THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON HURRICANE SCALE...THE SECOND MAJOR HURRICANE OF THE 2008 ATLANTIC HURRICANE SEASON.
It’s unfortunate, but people STILL have that “If it’s not true, they wouldn’t be allowed to say it on TV” attitude.
Last I heard, about 4:am Sun. but this could change. We are leaving about that time and heading to Jackson.
Gustav headed for current that fuels big storms
Deep warm water current that fuels nasty gulf hurricanes seems to be next stop for Gustav
From the 5 am Forecast Discussion from the National Hurricane Center:
FURTHER INTENSIFICATION IS EXPECTED FOR THE NEXT DAY OR SO WHILE THE SYSTEM TRAVERSES THE EXTREMELY WARM AND DEEP WATERS OF THE NORTHWESTERN CARIBBEAN SEA AND SOUTHERN GULF OF MEXICO. HOWEVER...BY 48 HOURS...ALMOST ALL OF THE GLOBAL MODELS SHOW AN INCREASE IN VERTICAL WIND SHEAR NEAR GUSTAV. IN ADDITION... SINCE THE LOOP CURRENT IS SOUTH OF ITS TYPICAL LOCATION... THE HURRICANE WILL BE MOVING OVER WATERS THAT ARE NOT NEARLY AS CONDUCIVE FOR STRENGTHENING AS THEY COULD BE.
THESE TWO FACTORS WILL HOPEFULLY WEAKEN THE STORM PRIOR TO U.S. LANDFALL. HOWEVER...GUSTAV IS EXPECTED TO BE A LARGE AND DANGEROUS HURRICANE AND THE NHC FORECAST CONTINUES TO SHOW GUSTAV AS A MAJOR HURRICANE AT LANDFALL.
There is some hope as for one key sentence (underlined and in different paragraph in the above) from this discussion of Gustav:
It'll be interesting to see if NOLA LEOS try gun grabbing again.
2nd paragraph on second page of the article...good point.
Pryaers for all who’ll be in harm’s way.
Anyone else wondering why New Orleans is hit this time of year while the Southern Decadence festival is in town.
do a google search on “Southern Decadence” to see what I am talking about. WARNING!!!!! Send the kids out for a paper before you click on any links
Looks like traffic is already backing up I-10 west at Kenner.
I put that up on a separate thread. It needs talking about, imo.
Sounds like Jindal's got a good handle on things. What's Nagin doing?
I just hope the NOLA PD’s done some housecleaning, personnel-wise that is...
The only good thing appears that it will hit in more lightly populated area of La.
It is currently projected to hit Acadiana hard (Lafayette/New Iberia/Abbeville/Breaux Bridge/Youngsville/Saint Martinville/Morgan City) quite hard, as well as Rayne/Crowley/Jennings/Lake Charles/Sulphur/Port Arthus as well.
There are a lot fewer people in New Orleans than there was prior to Katrina.
Additionally, Lafayette/New Iberia/Morgan City are key to the Oil Industry...
ha ha. Last night he looked a little humbled. Our new governor it seems is not giving him much choice. I’m really just amazed at how bobby has put himself ahead of this thing.
I’m sure all you smart FReepers have heard of this weather site for tracking hurricanes/storms...if not, check it out...very cool site...
So do the Cadillac dealerships!
My hubby just left ..deployed with his DMAT team
Maybe since they practice the art of Sodom and Gomorrah, maybe that is why there so much salt coming in from the sea (as in storm surge)...
But certainly God is not offended by these Southern Decadence folks, now could He ( /sarcasm off )
Update...
I-10 snarled as Louisiana evacuees pour into Texas ahead of Gustav
Hope TX is prepared for incoming...
Gee, I wonder why God left the French Quarter in tact?
Whoa.
That’s cool. Thanks for the link.
