John McCain Selects Alaska Governor Sarah Palin As Vice Presidential Running Mate

ARLINGTON, VA -- U.S. Senator John McCain today announced that he has selected Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to be his running mate and to serve as his vice president.

Governor Palin is a tough executive who has demonstrated during her time in office that she is ready to be president. She has brought Republicans and Democrats together within her Administration and has a record of delivering on the change and reform that we need in Washington.

Governor Palin has challenged the influence of the big oil companies while fighting for the development of new energy resources. She leads a state that matters to every one of us -- Alaska has significant energy resources and she has been a leader in the fight to make America energy independent.

In Alaska, Governor Palin challenged a corrupt system and passed a landmark ethics reform bill. She has actually used her veto and cut budgetary spending. She put a stop to the "bridge to nowhere" that would have cost taxpayers $400 million dollars.

As the head of Alaska's National Guard and as the mother of a soldier herself, Governor Palin understands what it takes to lead our nation and she understands the importance of supporting our troops.

Governor Palin has the record of reform and bipartisanship that others can only speak of. Her experience in shaking up the status quo is exactly what is needed in Washington today.

She will smoke Plugs Biden, the dumbest man in the Senate.

Last night, Biden ended his mini speech by saying to the crowd, "Love ya." To me, that was weird, smarmy, and inappropriate.

I hope Palin is able to draw a contrast between herself and Joe, another incredibly arrogant politician, like The One.

“...How do you figure? Obama has about 3 1/2 years as being a United States Senator and he was elected from a large state...”

Correction: Obama has 143 days a US Senator and 3+ years as a candidate for POTUS.

All the ‘accomplishments’ you mention only bolster his leftist credentials.

If you would rather have Obama as POTUS, so be it. I do not believe we can afford him!

I do worry some about having a candidate with a resume flimsier than BHO’s.

You're not alone. Consider McCain's age and the possibility that she has to fill in as president. It's frightening.

“Those 18 months make her 3 times more experienced than BO to be POTUS.”

And every single one of us agrees that he has way too little. I’m not sold on the idea of having a VP who I am not confident can step in immediately and I don’t think she has the experience to lead the nation yet.

In the time honored tradition of FreeRepublic, I hereby suggest that no Sarah Palin thread is complete without an obligatory photograph of Governor Palin!

I second that motion!

This blog http://www.andrewhalcro.com/ has the scoop. It's been in the papers up here too. andrewhalcro.com seems to be incoherent. You'll have to be much more specific about what your complaints are.

I think this election offers the most stark choice in political philosophy since Reagan ran against Jimmy Carter.

True, McCain lacks true conservative credentials on a whole host of issues, from free speech to immigration to taxes and even gun control.

But, I think Obama is way to the left of socialists, and has communist beliefs about central government economic planning, with tax and social policies to match. I believe an Obama presidency, combined with a Reid/Pelosi congress, will permanently change this country.

McCain was certainly not my first or even second choice in the primary, but the only thing that would have kept me from voting is if he picked Lieberman.

On that point I agree. However, I think it far more important that Obama NEVER have true power over this nation. McCain is in good health so hopefully he can serve a full term. Besides, she has more executive experience than Obama who sits at the top of the dem ticket.

I like this pick. It is a great answer to those who are saying if Obama - Biden loose than America is racist. Now we can say if McCain - Palin loses, America is sexist. This is going to be fun.

I think McCain - Palin will pick up quite a few ticked off Hillary voters also.

I agree 100% with your assessment. Obama is not the danger, it is those lurking in the shadows handling him. His administration would be a disaster. The dems would do all in the their power to never, ever lose the reigns of government again. Some of them truly scare me.

I have been a diehard Romney fan since day one - I have come to support McCain- kicking and screaming all the way.
McCain is a flawed candidate at best.

Having said that. and having come to grips with the fact that there is not a conservative The following are my observations:
He could have picked Ridge or Guilani Or Lieberman I would have had to sit the election out.

I feel that Ms. Palin is a marvelous person and a great conservative. There might be a chance for drilling in the Anwar after all without harm to the environment.

Vice President is a great way for the country to get used to a conservative woman being in power. I am not opposed to either a minority or a woman being elected as president as long as they are conservative. I would take a Maggie Thatcher over a mushy mouthed RINO any day.

It will make Obama and his wife (who I think would be the real person in power.) I get from his past that Obama is easily led, strays off in different directions, is narcisstic and lazy. He would turn the reigns over to Angry white hating Michelle while he pontificated at length. She is a Hilary Clinton that is filled with rage.

I feel that many of the disenfranchised Democrats who were really supporting Hilary because they wanted a woman in the White House will either sit this election out or vote McCain.

And Last but not least - Hope she has fangs - she will need them against Biden - but Biden will look like a fool if he trys to demonize a Mother of Five who is nice to look at.

Agree fully. I would say I am surprised, but McCain makes so many idiotic decisions it is just one more. This move will certainly hurt McCain.

I'll bet you on that one....

“...She is nothing more than an affirmative action pick.”

And the O-Drama isn’t? He’s the pinnacle of the sort of affirmative action the left has been pushing on the country for 40 years. I don’t care about his race, it’s the qualification question, which has been swept aside and ignored, DUE in part to his race. The left is playing race games, not the right.

And, Obama does have more experience than Palin.

In the legislative branch, not in the Executive branch. And he has zip, zero, nada on his list of accomplishments except for surrounding himself with ANTI-American leftists and voting for infanticide multiple times.....

As Rush said, Obama is even for abortion in the fourth trimester....
