Hayes: McCain may pick Cantor as VP
Fayetteville Observer [North Carolina] ^ | August | Henry Cuningham

Posted on 08/27/2008 2:30:08 PM PDT by MeanWestTexan

Noth Carolina Rep. Robin Hayes is predicting that Sen. John McCain will pick Rep. Eric Cantor of Virginia as his running mate.

“It sure looks like a great possibility to me,” Hayes said. “Eric is a tremendous friend, incredibly bright young man. He has wonderful credentials, and I think would be a very good, complementary candidate to John McCain.”

Hayes made his comments during and after a meeting with educators at Jack Britt High School. Rumors about Cantor have been spreading in recent weeks and began to grow stronger on Tuesday, Hayes said. Several media outlets are reporting that Cantor has come under serious consideration.

Cantor is a fourth-term Virginia congressman representing parts of Richmond and several counties to the northwest. He is chairman of the Congressional Task Force on Terrorism and Unconventional Warfare. Cantor also holds a seat on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, which has direct jurisdiction over taxes, trade, Social Security, Medicare, prescription drugs for seniors, health care and welfare reform.

In December 2002, he was selected to serve as chief deputy majority whip, giving him a seat at the House Republican Leadership table.

Friday will be McCain’s 72nd birthday. Cantor is 45.

“His age is good, he has a young family, he is in touch,” Hayes said. “He’s Jewish, very much in touch with that community.”

Cantor and his wife, Diana, have three children, Evan, Jenna and Michael, who attend Henrico County Public Schools.

The Republicans begin four-day convention on Monday in Minneapolis.

Cantor was “prominently missing from the list of speakers for the convention in Minneapolis,” Hayes said.

“I think it’s something worth keeping an eye on.”

“Noth Carolina Rep. Robin Hayes is predicting that Sen. John McCain will pick Rep. Eric Cantor of Virginia as his running mate. “

Eq’s cat Chuckles is predicting that John McCain will pick Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska as his running mate.

Holds the same weight.

Here’s hoping.

Btw, if that’s a Cantor ping list, could you please put me on it? Thanks. :)

Since it is obvious that McCain will pick at least 3 persons as VP, I would like to recommend he pick the US Men’s basketball team as VP. They’ve already won a gold medal so they have that special mojo that a veep needs. Plus they have a coach whose name uses almost no vowels. That’s kinda neat.

I know nothing about him. I have never seen him speak or never have heard him on the talk shows. Complete unknown to me.

Honestly I love Cantor and hope he is picked, but all this rumor crap is getting so lame-haha.

The more I read about Cantor the more I like him. I also think that by picking a younger than average veep, we can build for the future, beyond the McCain years. I think it would be a bold choice by McCain.

From what I’ve seen, so far, Cantor can hold his own against Biden. Don’t need anyone perceived as too laid back. A conservative bulldog would be an inspired choice. I personally really like Palin as well. I just am not sure she comes off strong enough. So much depends on this choice. I hope, I pray, McCain chooses wisely.

Why not Michael Phelps? He goes to Michigan, an important battleground state... Or, Dara Torres? (I'd suggest Nastia, but she's too young).

Horus, Tiger and Jetta are wishing that McCain would pick Mike Pence. They are the Cats of Doom, so maybe they can influence McCain.

Cantor - good choice. He’s my representative and I like him very much. However, Gov. Sarah Palin is who I would like him to choose. And, I would like to see a governor on the ticket. I think it would give it more balance and certainly be better than the 2 senators the Dems have.

Think about it. We all know that McCain wants to pick Lieberman, but probably won't because St. Paul would explode. McCain's inclination is to pick a candidate that is a thumb in the eye to conservatives. McCain's grandiosity is that he wants to win not with the Bush conservative coalition, but with his own maverick coalition.

Rep. Cantor looks like a fine upstanding conservative, who wouldn't upset any conservatives (save for the GOP anti-Semitics you search in vain for MWT). Since a Cantor pick wouldn't poke any conservatives in the eye, McCain is unlikely to pick him. We could probably increase Cantor's chances by starting FR threads threatening mayhem if Cantor is selected.

Intrade appears cool to Cantor, place your chips in Cantor, and maybe you'll be a RichWestTexan.

I’m a Romney guy but Cantor would be a great pick for McCain. He’s a straight-line conservative, young and energetic. I’ve never seen him debate but I don’t thing he would have too much of a problem with Biden.
