McCain: Time to fast track nuclear plants
Business Journal ^ | Aug. 22, 2008 | Mike Sunnucks

Arizona Sen. John McCain said the U.S. should fast track construction of nuclear power plants.

The Republican presidential candidate said Wednesday the U.S. should follow the lead of France, which relies heavily on nuclear power, building plants in five years instead of the 15-year or more years it now takes in the U.S.

McCain argues that more nuclear power as well as more domestic oil drilling and development of new energy sources will help the U.S. reduce dependency on foreign oil.

As you might imagine, the Sierra Club is against drilling, against nuclear energy, and is backing Obama.

I was about to say that in the late 1970’s it took about 15 years for a nuke plant to go from proposition to operation. Then I noticed in the text of the article that nothing had changed.

Fifteen years is simply unacceptable.

This is a fantastic idea. The fact that the left hates Nuclear power proves that they really don’t want a solution to Global Warming, they want to tear us down instead.

No new nuclear plant has been built in the US since 1978, that’s why.

That’s because everybody panicked after the accident at Three Mile Island. What you could not get through peoples heads was that ALL of the safety systems at Three Mile Island worked as they were suppose to.

From a safety point of view it was a lot of nothing.

And remember Three Mile Island’s accident was in 1979. That accident galvanized opposition to nuclear power.

Nuclear waste and the possibility of accidents should be taken into account, HOWEVER, don’t nuclear plants have an excellent safety record? And even at Three Mile Island, didn’t the reactor shut down safely the way it was supposed to in case of trouble??

The thing is, that nuclear produces no greenhouse gases, so the enviros should be excited about nuclear reducing our reliance on fossil fuels. The enviros are really inconsistent on this issue. To them, then, it’s better to continue running dirty coal fired power plants than invest in more nuclear.

I don’t understand the enviro. liberal / radical mindset.

And remember too, that half assed movie with Jane Fonda about a nuclear power plant accident was in theaters at the time of the Three Mile Island accident. She couldn’t have timed it better, could she?

we debate. others do.

Several Chinese plants are planned as of 2008, as are several Indian plants. Russia has begun building the world’s first floating nuclear power plant. The £100 million vessel, the Lomonosov, is the first of seven plants (70 MWe per ship) that Moscow says will bring vital energy resources to remote Russian regions. In July 2008, Russia announced plans to allocate $40 Billion from the state budget over the next 7 years for development of the nuclear energy sector and the nuclear industry. This will allow for construction of 26 major generating units in Russia by 2020 - about as many as were built in the entire Soviet period.

Lots of nuclear plants have been built in the US since 1976.

“Lots of nuclear plants have been built in the US since 1976.”

Name one.

I did a search and found articles that stated that no nuclear plants have been built since 1978 — I just didn’t post the link.

So go ahead tell us WHAT nuclear plants have been built and provide a source.

From a safety point of view it was a lot of nothing.

It was a very important "safety event" and lead to many improvements in the safety systems and philosophy of operations of nuclear reactors. From an public safety point of view, the impact was very small.

It's simple really. They don't want anyone to have anymore than anyone else.

To them the world is a big commune and if you cheat by developing cheap resources and then actually using those resources to make your life better than other people on the planet, well, you're just scum.

So they go out of their way to block things that can enhance your living standards.

What you could not get through peoples heads was that ALL of the safety systems at Three Mile Island worked as they were suppose to.

Actully there was a safety system failure that lead to the unfortunate chain of events.

Interesting that you insist that I provide proof but you don't post any for yours even after you say you have lots of links.

SONGS-2 Waterford-3 PVNGS 1,2 and 3.

Proof? I was there! There were more but enough for now.

OOPS! Everybody knows that there hasn't been a new nuclear power plant built in the USA in 30 years.

Everyone but liberals and trolls.
