Rome, Aug 19, 2008 / (CNA) -- Archbishop Raymond Burke, prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, the highest judicial authority of the Holy See, said this week that Catholics who publicly support abortion -- especially politicians -- should not receive Communion, and that ministers of Communion should be responsibly charitable in denying it to them if they ask for it “until they have reformed their lives.”

[[Burke082108.jpg]]In an interview with the magazine Radici Christiane, Archbishop Burke pointed out that there is often a lack of reverence at Mass when receiving Communion. “Receiving the Body and Blood of Christ unworthily is a sacrilege,” he warned. “If it is done deliberately in mortal sin it is a sacrilege.”

To illustrate his point, he referred to “public officials who, with knowledge and consent, uphold actions that are against the Divine and Eternal moral law. For example, if they support abortion, which entails the taking of innocent and defenseless human lives. A person who commits sin in this way should be publicly admonished in such a way as to not receive Communion until he or she has reformed his life,” the archbishop said.

How do they identify those who cannot receive communion?

I think this is just a gesture, not an enforceable edict.

Maybe some will... mabye some won’t...but it is up to American Catholics that it is enforced!!! Just like it was up to American Catholics to get rid of the bad priests!

The U.S. Church, like anything else, is only as strong as the weakest link. And with the help of God the Father, God the Son & God the Holy Spirit, we Catholics will “get it done!”

Maybe I’m not qualified to comment because it’s not my church in question. But isn’t Communion only allowed to be withheld due to the person’s personal actions, not by what he advocates in terms of public policy? For example, with regard to abortion, shouldn’t the church only apply this to someone who has personally participated in an abortion? I’m not pro-abort, but it would be a shame if Catholic officials were perceived to undermining their independence from the political process.

This is a "thought" sin and while I do not agree with abortion in any way...There are other "sins"...How does a priest weed out the others??

It’s certainly enforceable in the case of high-profile, well known politicians. I can assure you that every priest in DC recognizes, say, Nancy Pelosi or any of the others. But Wuerl is the weak link here, and I think it’s pretty safe to say that nothing will happen, not in DC nor probably in most of these politicians’ home dioceses, either.

BTW, this doesn’t come out of the blue. These people are usually first spoken to by the priest or bishop, warned, asked to change their lives, and then forbidden to receive Communion. So far there hasn’t been a “list,” although in the case of people who have been forbidden to receive Communion but still present themselves, I suppose that’s always a possibility. However, as I said, pro-abortion politicians are safe in DC.

I think it's self-explanatory.
Until those who support abortion, specifically politicians, shall I say “change their ways” they are not to receive Holy Communion...pretty damn clear from where I'm sitting.

with politicians their statements and voting record should be sufficient to identify them and their faces are well known. A NARL spokesperson who regularly shows up on the news would be readily identifiable. For those whose faces don’t show up but are major advocates of abortion I’m sure that there are people who will identify them. I’d assume that this would also apply to those who push for capital punishment as well.
