Kiss me I’m Amish.
Two odd thoughts I can’t wrap my head around:
“”An Amish woman said, ‘We joke among ourselves...”
So - can we expect Amish comedians eventually?
“Amish settlements have been established in seven new states ... The new states are: Arkansas, Colorado, Maine...”
I’m having trouble imagining the Amish dealing with New England libs.
The Amish have always had "four or five" children per family - in fact, they used to average more than that. Their fecundity is not a new factor that explains the doubling.
Either there are numerous new converts (which the Amish do not exactly encourage) or there was an enormous amount of apostasy before which is now leveling off.
The Amish are very funny if you know them. The men have a very earthy sence of humor. I am not sure of the women
The “taxis” they refer to are often large passenger vans that they hire to take them to job sites, shopping, medical appointments, etc.
Here in Pennsyltucky has imposed regulations on these “taxis” in the name of safety.
We brought our Haflinger draft pony mare to an Amish farm to be trained, and for my husband to be trained how to drive her in the cart. The Amish farmer’s wife was astounded and made the remark, “How does a man get to be 40 years old and not know how to drive a horse!!”
Must be something in der cheese.
The Amish in lancaster do not encourage converts at all. In fact one Amish friend of mine can only recall one convert that he knows. That person was a “hobo” that an Amish family allowed to live in the barn. After a number of years, after he could speak Pennsylvania Dutch and after he grew a beard, he was considered Amish and moved into the house.
The Amish started from a very small base and the population grouth was not evident to outsiders until it became large enough to be visible.
...our farm heritage club was given an old barn that was built before the Civil War...we hired a team of Amish carpenters to disasemble it and resurrect it on our club grounds....old post and beam structures don’t phase them a bit...they do a fine job and give you an honest day’s work...they all had to come to work in a van driven by an Englishman[that’s what they call you and me]...they don’t talk much while they work and in hot weather they can get a little ripe, if you get my drift.
i thought they meant the immigrant taxi drivers like here in NYC. ha! that would have been funny...and true, sadly.
They must be living in an amish paradise.
That whole fracas got started in Indiana County where I grew up. "Safety" is a convenient, politically adept way of saying "revenue from licensing fees." For as long as I can remember folks were giving the Amish rides in their station wagons, pick up trucks and vans. The only accident I ever saw involving the Amish was a Camaro that must have been moving at a good clip when it came over a hill and rear-ended a horse drawn carriage.
Not pretty.
This will likely give CAIR a reason for more muslim presence in PA and appeal for sympathy.
No TVs.
They’ve had problems in Lancaster County for 30 years+. Over fertilizing the soil and poisoning their wells with excess Nitrogen, six-fingered kids from inbreeding and the real estate really took off in the 70s and the growth in the area is amazing.
They have been leaving for years for a very simple reason mentioned above, the cost of real estate. Started closer to NYC and Philly and continues outward with time.
The Amish in western MD have actually adopted the use of computers because they need them for business, about 13 years ago m/l.
