TODAY: Rev. Rick Warren puts Obama, McCain on the same stage (LIVE thread)
The Seattle Times ^ | 8/16/08 | Duke Helfand

Posted on 08/16/2008 11:59:35 AM PDT by XR7

LAKE FOREST, Calif. — When John McCain and Barack Obama appear on the same stage today, they will vividly demonstrate the reach that has made the Rev. Rick Warren among the most significant evangelists of his generation.

He's a megastar who leads the nation's fourth-largest church and reaches thousands of ministers through the Internet and crusades against poverty and AIDS. That globe-trotting work and his successful book — "The Purpose-Driven Life: What on Earth Am I Here For?" — puts him at the vanguard of a movement that inspires young, socially conscious Christians.

But his willingness to soft-pedal political issues once central to U.S. evangelicals, such as opposition to abortion, has opened him to criticism that he has strayed from his calling to spread the Gospel.

Today's forum also is a sign of religion's importance in the 2008 presidential campaign, and the emergence of a new style of evangelical leadership on the national stage that is not tied to a single party and has broadened its social agenda beyond that of the religious right.

"This is absolutely a changing of the guard, and it suggests that the new guard of the evangelical movement is able to generate the attention and focus of both parties," said D. Michael Lindsay, a sociologist at Rice University and author of "Faith in the Halls of Power: How Evangelicals Joined the American Elite."

Warren personally invited the two candidates — "friends of mine" — via their cellphones. His event at the Saddleback Church will be broadcast live on CNN and Fox News Channel and streamed on the Web. It has among its aims "helping the church regain credibility and encouraging our society to return to civility," he said.

It's likely that fans and critics will be watching closely...

"Barack Obama “argued cold-bloodedly on the Illinois Senate floor that babies who survive botched late-term abortions should not be considered ‘persons’ because this would be tantamount to admitting ‘that they are persons that are entitled to the kinds of protections that would be provided to a — a child, a 9-month old — child that was delivered to term.’ “

Sorry...not my kind of guy.
That's tanamount to murder.

However, wardaddy IS my kind of guy.

Don't ever dispute wardaddy.

Especially when it comes to birthing babies.

He’s a Globalist just like Senator McCain, President Bush, Sen. Obama, and our lovely and great Governor Perry down here in Texas. I really think all globalist politicians should be investigated for corruption.

All the best to you FReepers and God bless,

Jonathan

WTF is an “evangelical”?

I know what an evangelical CHRISTIAN is supposed to be.

Why does the media keep ignoring the word CHRISTIAN?

I remember when they were called “fundamentalists”.

and then we were told that the Islamic tyranny societies were Islamic fundamentalists so that killed the use of that word.

That’s hysterical...thanks for the report. Yesterday when I was passing by a pet shop, there were hanging t-shirts in the window that said—PUGS FOR OBAMA. I wonder who poodles are voting for.

I wonder who poodles are voting for.

That reminds me of that wonderful NRA ad in the 2004 campaign - a white poodle with a ribbon on its head, wearing a sweater with "Kerry" on it, and under it the phrase: "This dog don't hunt." Hysterical! I sent the NRA a contribution on the spot, even though I don't own and never have owned a gun.

Oh my gosh...Ellen RATner is spinning for Barry saying that Barry won and McCain said nothing! Even the Friends are shocked and think McCain won hands down! Ellen thinks it was a loss for McCain because he came across as a "right wing." Ellen--he made his comments to the audience and that's not going to win the election. Jim Pinkerton said it was a win for McCain and the high point being his POW experience "his sacred patriotism that Americans relate to."

Ellen--What did he say that was different than the Bushies? Dave Briggs (Friend)--(quite heatedly) what did Obama say that was new, that he has no opinion on abortion, that he is not qualified to make that decision? He knew that question was coming, Ellen! Ellen--it was an "in the middle" answer, that is what he needs to win the election...McCain's answer was pandering.

Could someone please SLAP Ellen RATner!

LOL, where we watching the same interview.

You are correct in that she said although McCain won the night he will be perceived as a panderer and Obama will be viewed as a straight shooter.

Talk about reversal of roles.

Another Obama deception on record:

Obama at one point is taking about opposing the war and he still had questions that keeped coming up about the Taliban and Al qedah, WHERE?

Example: Joe Bidens observations;

http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/07/17/1204594.aspx

On Aug. 1, 2007, when Obama unveiled his counterterrorism agenda, the Biden camp fired off a snarky email congratulating him for his “Johnny-come-lately position” on Afghanistan, noting that during two Foreign Relations Committee hearings on Afghanistan and other subjects, Obama didn’t ask questions about the Taliban, Al Qaeda, or Afghanistan.

Iron our shirts moment!!!

Obama is talking about welfare and blurts out an assumption it is just women on welfare, like men don’t use it.

I am SHOCKED by the Friends...they are practically jumping up and down on the curvy couch excitedly talking about McCain. Even Ali, who mentioned Barry's ums, and ahs, and laid back style...they asked if he was still in vacation mode. They played the “evil” question and Barry's put me to sleep...Griff pointed out that Barry did NOT even bring up Al Qaeda as evil.
