"NEW YORK (CNN) -- With a full load of classes, two young children and her bills piling up, Michelle decided to face her economic straits in a pretty unorthodox way. As the nation's economy is slumping, some fertility clinics say interest in donating has surged. She is donating her eggs to an infertile couple. "The cost of living is crazy right now, with two kids, gas prices and rent. ... I'm living paycheck to paycheck," said the 24-year-old, who did not give her last name to protect her identity. "I just really need the money to finish school." Michelle is not alone. As the nation's economy is slumping, some fertility clinics say interest in donating has surged.
...
An egg donor is typically compensated between $5,000 and $10,000. Experts say that although most women donate out of desire to help infertile couples, the financial allure is real."

This is the free market at work -- and it works! In the USA an infertile woman can get eggs so she can have children and a woman who is smart and is healthy can get paid for the discomfort donating eggs. In places like England and Sweden they don't allow for monetary compensation for doners and have all kinds of regulations (the government controls every aspect of the the health care system there) and they not only have a shortage of sperm doners but a massive shortage of egg doners. People either have to give up at times or travel to countries like Spain to get pregnant.

She is a student and living pay check to pay check...thats what students do.
Good lord...students are poor.
In San Francisco she could get more like 10-15K, obviously in the wrong market. (Ok, before I get yelled at...I think this action on the woman's part is sick and weird, ok ok.)

It is also worth noting that donating eggs is not like donating blood. They can’t just go in and donate eggs because they want to. The applicants are screened very thoroughly both medically and psychologically to ensure they would make good donors. If they make it past that process, they are then able to be donors only if a needy couple personally selects them to be their donor.

I think sperm donors get paid for contributing sperm. So it makes sense that egg donors would also get paid.
You are correct, she’s not donating eggs, she’s selling them. Words have meaning and we should use proper terms.

I've seen 3 or 4 such stories in the last week.
Dim economy drives (minority group) to (personal action) (odd noun) for (term regarding economic gain).

Over Hard or scrambled? She sounds fairly well scrambled.
E-Harmony bio:
Twenty four year old female college student, two kids (no mention of fathers), finds it surprising that paycheck must be spent on living expenses, doesn't know the difference between a sale and a donation, nevertheless starting small home egg business.

Whatever a "dire economy" might be, it can't be as bad as a "recession." Because we're not in a recession.
One struggles to imagine the adjectives CNN would come up with if we were.
