Paul Newman has finished chemotherapy and has told his family he wants to die at home...

Yesterday, it was reported in America that Newman, 83, had only weeks to live and had returned home to his wife, Joanne Woodward...

Someone once asked Newman about infidelity and he supposedly answered, "Why would I go go out for hamburger when I come home to steak every night?"

Paul Newman was a bit before my time so the only movie I remember him in was that pool-shark movie he made with Tom Cruise a while back.

Cruise credits Newman with turning him into the nutball he is today. Not in those words, of course, but he says Paul berated him for making the "jingoistic" Top Gun and "opened his eyes" to what was wrong with America. It was soon after that that he signed on for Born On the Fourth to begin making up for Top Gun.

At one time, Cruise was studying to be a priest. I don't know if Newman had anything to do with his falling away from that and into Scientology.

The other day I was thinking about this - and it crossed my mind that they should name Lime Rock raceway after him. Any thoughts? Wasn’t that the track he was instrumental in establishing and the one he ruled as a driver in various classes?

I have enjoyed his work and consider him one of those very respectable folks you just have to disagree with on political matters.

My wife and I lived in the Westport, CT area back in the late 1970’s. Occasionally we would see Paul Newman or his wife in town. My wife at the time worked for a firm that had their offices on the top of a 5 story office building. On one of the lower floors Paul Newman had an office. On one occasion my wife was leaving for the day, taking the elevator down to the bottom floor where her car was parked. She’s alone in the elevator when it stops and Paul Newman steps in ... he nods at her and says good afternoon. My wife, who is rarely at a lost for words stammered out some appropriate response ... but beyond that didn’t say anything more. When the elevator stopped on the ground floor he politely stepped aside and let her exit. My wife who is an attractive women often tells the story of being alone on an elevator with Paul Newman ... probably every womens dream ... caught so completely by surprise she couldn’t think of anything to say.
