There were more sparks in that scene than you’d get off a cat scooting through a plastic tunnel.

We came very close never to having any Paul Newman performances to talk about. Newman was in the Navy in World War II, trained as a radioman-gunner in Avenger torpedo bombers. Late in the war his aircrew and a number of other crews were ordered to join the Bunker Hill off Okinawa as replacements. Newman and his crew were delayed when the pilot developed an ear infection. By the time his infection cleared up the Bunker Hill had been hit by two Kamikazes. Every single person in the draft Newman’s crew was supposed to be in died.

“I would like at least to know his name!”
“He was called John Russell”
Hombre was one of my favorite movies of his along with Hud and the original “The Hustler”.
He was a liberal and said some things I didn’t like but he was a great actor and stayed true to his wife for 50 years. We can’t all be prefect, RIP Mr. Newman.

Ol’ Blue Eyes will be missed....man, so many great films with Newman. Also, the auto racing world will miss him greatly, too...another field he was very successful in.

Sorry to hear the old boy is going fast. I disagree with his liberal politics, but otherwise, he seemed to be a pretty straight shooter.

A great actor and a good man. I love all of his movies. Sure, he was very liberal, but I don't ever remember him being mean or loud about it.

Strother Martin used to buy his cars in Thousand Oaks at Nesen Cadillac/Oldsmobile; had a Toronado in 1975.

He really does (did) talk like that.

Strother was also with Newman in Slapshot as the Chiefs owner.

I think it humanized and made sympathetic these two delayed adolescents so that no one really cried at the end - they simply nodded their heads.

There was never a worse movie made than Raintree County; the tree came off better than the performances of Liz Taylor and Montgomery Clift; of course the book was a mess of spoiled spaghetti, too.

I agree. I have always thought “The Verdict” was his best, and was underrated.

Not to mention it’s always worth watching to catch a few peeks of Charlotte Rampling, one of the hottest numbers ever!

I first noticed Strother in Who Shot Liberty Vacance - standing in the street, frothing at the mouth, urging Lee Marvin on; then in one of the Harper movies we see Martin up on a hill in Malibu dressed in a long, white flowing robe saying monotonously: “Where’s the harm...”

Prayers for Mr. Newman and his family.

Both he and his wife are great actors and I’ve enjoyed
all their movies.

Another great one who can’t be replaced.

Me too. They just started with Episode #1 and #2 this last week on local RTN. Good stuff.

Btw, I didn't attack Newman or Garner. I respect both men's acting, just not their politics.
