The family of John Edwards' former mistress, Rielle Hunter, is challenging the former senator to take a DNA paternity test after his claim that he did not father Hunter's six-month old child.
In the first reaction from Hunter's family, her younger sister Melissa told ABC News that Edwards should immediately follow through on his pledge to take a paternity test.
"I would challenge him to do so," the sister said. "Somebody must stand up and defend my sister," she said. "I wish that those involved would refrain from bad-mouthing my sister."
In his interview with ABC News correspondent Bob Woodruff acknowledging the affair, Edwards said he knew the child was not his because of "the timing" of the pregnancy and the affair.
"I would welcome participating in a paternity test," Edwards said. "I'm only one side of the test, but I'm happy to participate in one."
Hunter left her Santa Barbara home earlier this week in advance of Edwards' ABC News interview.

LMAO! 'Bout fell outta my chair on that one.
I'm betting both of your questions turn out to be true.
“Eventually hell have to admit the baby girl is his”
The key word there might be ‘eventually.’ These people are stalling for time, hoping it will all drift away, a la John Kerry and his military separation forms.
Somehow I don’t think your mistress and the National Enquirer are going to let this die, John, no matter how much you and your enablers want to make it so.
In the interview, I believe Edwards did refer to her as ‘the woman’. I sort of sat up when he said that.
Is he implying then that the DNA might somehow be acquired from some random baby and that it might falsely implicate him? Or that Rielle won’t dare provide the sample?
Wasn’t Kate Michaelman a big Edwards backer. I wonder why the womens groups are so quiet on this matter.
I would think that Mrs. Andrew Young would not want a claim made against her estate or the future estate of her children. The Young family have a vested interest in clearing up the facts in this case also.
LMAO!!!
Democrat culture of lying, sleaze, and corruption BUMP!
Uh, both?
She’s forty. Women are medically termed ‘geriatric moms’ at 35. There’s a VERY sharp drop in fertility at 35. She was 41. In women at peak fertility, the opportunity only lasts 3 days. He should’ve known to wear a condom at least for days 8-18. Men know when women are menstruating. This jackass ought to have at least made those calculations.
According to the Nat Enq Andrew Young’s wife is starting to tire of the charade. Sad for Elizabeth but I’ll bet this is not the first time John has strayed.
Edwards is toast politically. He has absolutely no reason to comply with a test.
It will take a court order to actually get him to take the paternity test he has agreed to take.
This sister seems to think it is Edward’s child. I hope someone will eventually care about the child. But, there are “two worlds.” One with parents who care about their offspring, and another world with liberal politicians.
time for the enquirer to do some dumpster diving - or maybe they already have - for dna
lisa druck better get that ring on her finger quick - if that is her objective - because she has quite a few miles on her and won’t hold up much longer - silky pony has more than $100 to drag through the trailer park and can probably find something better
So basically he jumped himself.
The sister would know when they were together last and if Edwards’ timeline is a lie.
I’d say there’s probably a good reason she hasn’t said anything herself, and it’s because she’s protecting her current windfall.
Honestly, she may know that John isn’t the only potential father, and may even know for a fact he isn’t. She could have been stringing him along all this time and, since she at very least had the affair as leverage, they would keep her quiet with or without a paternity test. With that cat out of the bag, she may have some serious downside to a paternity test.
Although it looks real bad for John, I am having trouble thinking she’s the type to have limited herself to one man. My personal belief is that John thinks this is his child, but may not know for sure.
Yes, he does seem to be digging fast. Why so brazen as to agree to a test? I immediately assumed he had bought Rielle off and so knew she couldn’t challenge him. But did he fall victim to his own lawyering? Is there nothing stopping Rielle’s family from making such a challenge—without jeopardizing a payoff to Rielle?
