The family of John Edwards' former mistress, Rielle Hunter, is challenging the former senator to take a DNA paternity test after his claim that he did not father Hunter's six-month old child.
In the first reaction from Hunter's family, her younger sister Melissa told ABC News that Edwards should immediately follow through on his pledge to take a paternity test.
"I would challenge him to do so," the sister said. "Somebody must stand up and defend my sister," she said. "I wish that those involved would refrain from bad-mouthing my sister."
In his interview with ABC News correspondent Bob Woodruff acknowledging the affair, Edwards said he knew the child was not his because of "the timing" of the pregnancy and the affair.
"I would welcome participating in a paternity test," Edwards said. "I'm only one side of the test, but I'm happy to participate in one."
Hunter left her Santa Barbara home earlier this week in advance of Edwards' ABC News interview.

However, this doesn’t rule out he is the sperm donor.
That WOULD fall under his "99%" standard of truth.
You know what, even if the DNA came back that he WASN'T the father, at this point no one would believe that he hadn't rigged it somehow, possibly with a promise to not sue the lab for ten years or something.
He’s certainly no Coleman Young, who would proudly show off pictures of the kids he sired out of wedlock during his press conferences.
In the "Nightline" interview, Edwards also heatedly denied that he's the father of Rielle Hunter's daughter, and explained his visit to see her in a Los Angeles hotel, as reported in the National Enquirer.
"I was there for a very simple reason —because I was trying to keep this mistake that I had made from becoming public," he said. "The bottom line was [Hunter's friend] said the purpose of the meeting was that she was having some trouble she just wanted to talk."
"Nothing was resolved — I didn’t talk to them about paying money or anything like that," he said.
He also distanced himself from a photograph that the National Enquirer said showed him holding Hunter's baby.
"I have absolutely no idea what that picture is," he said. "I have no idea who that baby is."
I'm actually enjoying the fact that John Edwards is digging his hole deeper - which is a great place for the lying sack of slime that he is. He's lied all of his life and not only gotten away with it, but has gotten filthy rich doing so. This is the classic payback for what he richly deserves. It's too bad that his despicable actions are hurting his family and innocent baby.

Sometimes a lie is not a lie. Edwards uses the diversion tactic. Edwards admits to other contacts and claims telephone contacts but never addresses other physical laisons! The ABC report is either a dolt or an enabler in the deception.

OK, Silk Pony admits an “affair” in 2006. Denies kid is his due to “timing”, not because he always practices “safe sex”. The child he is holding in the spy camera photo is an infant so had to be born in 2008, leaving date of conception sometime in mid-2007.
He could be donor IF he did use a condum and she saved it in a sperm bank, waited until “interest” accrued and then up she goes with the turkey baster.

Aug. 8, 2008: Edwards admits to ABC News that he had an extramarital affair, but says he is not the father of Hunter’s baby. He adds that he told his family about his relationship with Hunter in 2006 and made a point of telling ABC News’ Bob Woodruff that his wife’s cancer was in remission when he began the affair with Hunter.

Oops. Rielle forgot to fill her sister in on the details of the plan. Edwards is safe providing his DNA as long as Rielle doesn’t provide anything of the child’s to compare it to.
Thanks...I guess the news brief I was reading had not included that info. Yes, it IS disgusting how this will continue to hurt his family. I think he’s been 100% dishonest on this. I don’t believe his reasons for the late night visit and I don’t believe that his big campaign donor just happens to be the father of this baby either.
His political career is over.
I’d say Rielle fell for John and thought he loved her.
Not saying she’s a great example of womanhood, but it happens.
Now that he’s come out saying he never loved her and baby not his, her loyalty may dissolve a little and she may agree to the paternity test.
It may depend on how generous the SP is prepared to be....
What does that make John besides being a John? Is the “other woman” the villain of this piece or does Pony Boy deserve some responsibility?
Methinks she was always "in remission".
That’s a nice sum for me, but peanuts compared to what Edwards has and what the ‘real’ children are getting and will inherit.
