Just one paragraph tucked toward the end of a column. But Judith Warner's words offer a revealing insight into how liberals view economics and the world. In the lefty mindset, making it isn't a matter of doing or making something of value. It comes down instead to contriving to get a piece of the action, a share of the wealth that some undefined other has created in some undescribed way.
The gist of Warner's column, Compassion Deficit Disorder, is that Americans have become increasingly cranky and suspicious of how others are gaming the system. She cites Michael Savage's accusations that the reported outbreaks of autism, asthma ADHD are false epidemics, the result of doctors and parents conniving to produce false diagnoses that yield increased services or welfare. Warner also points to high school students applying to college who dream up minority status of one sort or other to work affirmative-action levers to their benefit.

Could it be that the white liberals are starting to feel the impact of their own warped policies like affirmative action and open borders. Half of the children today under five are classified by the USG as minorities. 87% of all immigrants entering the US, legally and illegally, qualify for affirmative action and business set asides. By 2050 non-Hispanic whites will be 47% of the population [down from 89% in 1965 and 67% today] according to the Pew Research Center and the Bureau of the Census.
Yes, the demographics of this country are rapidly changing and it even affects white liberals. Surprise.

I always thought it was insane that in cities with a majority hispanic population the government gave hispanic preferences.
All of these preferences based on race, ethnicity, and gender are insane. It will be interesting to see what happens to these preferences when non-Hispanic whites become less than 50% of the population.
what will happen is EXACTLY what happened when women became the majority at colleges.

The race baiters and quota queens will demand the preferences stay in place until white males are no longer able attend college.
Then everyone can be a ‘minority’....... and everyone should qualify for ‘preferences’...... the challenge will be how to give ever group in society preference over ever other....... there’s no logical or empirical problem with that, is there?

Warner simply repearts the old leftist canard about the huge mountain of wealth that simply exists without anyone creating it. In the leftist view nasty conservative Republicans got to the huge pile first and refuse to give anyone else their rightful share. I’ve actually read article by ultra-lib columnists claiming that very thing. They truly believe that no one deserves or owns what they worked for. But just try to take the Mercedes or BMW away from the libs. Then it’s different.
In the interest of pooping on her party, it ain’t just Americans doing the competing. We’ve got 12-20 million illegals with their grubby little hands in the pie , too.
