Uniontown Area explores use of Tasers in schools

The Uniontown Area School Board, as well as concerned citizens and parents, had an opportunity Wednesday to learn about Tasers that will be proposed in the school district and share their opinions on the subject.

Even before Don Homer, the director of security for the school district, could show the proposed Tasers to be used and explain how they operate, those attending a special meeting voiced opposition.

One resident, Mary Hackney, a teacher at Laurel Highlands School District for 35 years, said she had to break up many fights in her years but no incident required a Taser.

"This is not a safe idea," Hackney said.

Gee! I get to add one more item to my long list of why government schools resemble prisons.

Also, why would any rational parent send a child into a situation where teachers are required to break up “many fights” and where tasers are being considered as necessary? As a parent, does this sound like a safe environment for your child?

It would be better for a child to be completely illiterate and innumerate than to ever step foot in some of our nation's government schools! I seriously mean it! This is especially true when we do have a good system for adult education that a child could access later in life.

Wow, our representative government, and local control of school systems in action!

A proposal is made, citizens and their elected representatives discuss the proposal, and at some point a vote is taken.

From reading this article, I would guess that the school board is going to vote against having Tasers in the schools until and unless a greater need for them is seen.

Amelia,

The article states, “One resident, Mary Hackney, a teacher at Laurel Highlands School District for 35 years, said she had to break up many fights in her years but no incident required a Taser. “

Why would any rational parent send their child to a school where teachers were forced to break up many fights? In **all** of my working career I have never had to break up a fight! I personally would not work in an environment where fights needed to be broken up. I would immediately quit and find a safer work environment.

If an adult would find such an environment very threatening and uncomfortable in their work life, why would any parent subject their child to this? Why would government force children into such an emotionally and physically abusive situation?

There are government schools in this nation that are so horrific that it would be better for a child to be illiterate and innumerate rather than ever step foot in one! I **seriously*** mean this!

“I personally would not work in an environment where fights needed to be broken up. I would immediately quit and find a safer work environment.”

Indeed. In addition, at least you have the choice. The unfortunate students don’t. They’re forced to drag themselves into those places day after day, and those who force them to do so have the arrogant attitude that the students are lucky to be there.

There are two words for the above: Child abuse!

Good point about the arrogant attitude.

It is that arrogant attitude which is the worst type of emotional abuse. Surely the children **know** that these prison-like government buildings are hell on earth, yet, the people who they should be trusting are telling them they should be grateful for being so “lucky”.

While I don't deny leaning libertarian, I don't really sign up for ping lists.

As for the topic of government schools, both my parents have dedicated their lives to being schoolteachers and are among the best human beings I know. I received my education at a public school, and found it sufficient.

On the other hand, those who want to homeschool their kids or send them to private school are just fine in my book. Parental involvement is the key, and I laud them for caring so much about their child's education.

Students didn’t get into fights when you were in school?

It happened when I was in school 30-something years ago, and my parents say students got into fights when they were in school 50+ years ago.

I suspect it has always happened. The difference now is that it frequently gets treated as a criminal matter.

Until they go bat guano crazy, seeing conspiracies in everything and ranting like lunatics about the evil system, and public school prisons.

If you read the "Little House" books, Laura Ingalls Wilder describes several fights at school - one at least in which the teacher was hurt so bad by a gang of boys that school was canceled. She describes these as happening in both her school and her husband's.

We've come so far huh? Those great public schools, the tools of Satan even over 150 years ago.
