Is your scooter a polluter?
Idaho Statesman ^ | 8/8/2008 | CYNTHIA SEWELL

Which gets better gas mileage, a Hummer or a scooter?

No contest.

But which is more polluting?

It may not be what you think.

"It's true. The cleanest scooter is still dirtier than a car," said John Swanton, air pollution specialist with the California Air Resources Board.

No,

They don’t have a point, and that was my point.

Unleaded fuel and a 3-way catalytic converter on some Buick Regal already in 1982 with a 2.8 liter was a cleaner car than my 2 liter BMW, by a long shot.

From those of us that don't worship the false god of "GloBull Warming", a collective "who cares!".

Could be. :) When I'm working on the back fence or the garden I often ride the scooter back there, particularly if I suspect that I'll be making multiple trips back and forth. It seems silly because I may only be riding 250 or 300 feet, but when you end up making half a dozen trips it pays off. I'm thinking about rigging up some kind of hitch on the back so I can pull around my lawn wagon.

I could probably enter my scooter in a world's ugliest scooter contest. :) But it starts and runs every time... for me at least. It doesn't like my daughter and won't start for her once it warms up. But for me, two kicks, max!

I put 1/2 gallon of gas in it about six months ago and it's still going. It also has an oil tank for the injector. I think I put a quart of oil in that three years ago.

I can believe this. American autos have all kinds of pollution controls on them. I have seen a few ads claiming that some particular new cars pollute less while running than an older car parked in a driveway, or that they are so good at removing pollutants that they actually leave the air cleaner.

Scooters, however, rely on being small and light. Their design hasn't changed much over time. This is also because one of the main goals is to be cheap, especially for developing countries. Adding pollution controls on a motor scooter will add weight, and at a certain point people will just go buy a small car.

I didn’t realize when I posted this thread one kinda funny thing.

I pulled it off the Idaho Statesman website, but when I was at the store I glanced at the news stand. This was the front page leading article! Hugh and series news I guess...
