Erin Brockovich: Gardasil (the case against Merck's HPV vaccine)
The Brockovich Report ^ | August 6, 2008 | Erin Brockovich

Posted on 08/07/2008 7:13:47 AM PDT by weegee

We have been spending our days getting all our ducks armed for bear and in a row--all of our anti-Gardasil ducks, that is. From checking my various areas on the internet, to finding moderators to listening to the tragic and painful stories of victims of the Gardasil vaccine, it has been a very busy time for me and my team.

Gardasil, as you should know by now, is an HPV vaccine sold by Merc, a vaccine with a flawed marketing campaign targeting young girls. The premise is that the vaccine will protect young girls from cervical cancer, as well as a couple of varieties of HPV. But the vaccine is NOT a cancer preventative, and it has not been thoroughly tested. Not only does Gardasil not protect everyone, it does not prevent all types of cervical cancer. According to current science, there are fifteen types of HPV associated with cervical cancer but Gardasil only counters HPV types 16 and 18. The vaccine requires three doses to start and scientists don't even know how frequently boosters will be needed. They don't know because they did not adequately research this before putting the vaccine out on the market using our young girls as guinea pigs.

Merc was even pushing to have this untried vaccine REQUIRED by states. Governer Perry of Texas--who bypassed the state legislation with an executive order--has ties to Merck. Mike Toomey, Perry’s former chief of staff is one of the drug company’s three lobbyists in Texas. The governor also received $6,000 from Merck’s political action committee during his re-election campaign. "Merck is bankrolling efforts to pass state laws across the country mandating Gardasil for girls as young as 11 or 12." As a mother, should I have to sign a waver to protect my daughter from having a potentially dangerous vaccine forced on her?

What makes this vaccine so terrible? It's not just the fear that some parents have that administering a vaccine against stds to nine year olds will encourage sexual activity. The concern is based on much more concrete issues than that. 7195 of them, in fact.

The Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) now has 7195 individual adverse reactions listed--and as it is a database not everyone knows about, not all of the adverse reactions are being reported. The Centers for Disease Control report over 9,000 adverse reactions for Gardasil. There is a rising total of deaths connected with the administration of this vaccine; as well as have been reports of seizure activity, tingling, numbness and loss of sensation in the fingers and limbs. There is serious question about girls initially having short-term health problems associated with getting this vaccine that could turn into long-term neurological or immune system disorders; and there is serious question about administering this vaccine at the same time as others.

Gardasil is a vaccine developed by Merck to prevent Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). HPV is known to cause cervical cancer. Although Merck has claimed that Gardasil has no significant side effects, reports filed with the FDA suggest otherwise.

The FDA Vaccine Adverse Effect Reporting System has more than 8,000 incidents associated with Gardasil. The most serious complications reported include death and the development of blood clots.

If you or a loved suffered a serious adverse event, such as death, disability or blood clot following the administration of Gardasil, please contact me erin@brockovich.com. I will have one of our staff of experienced attorneys review your claim to advise you about your rights.

It's not that there may be anything untrue, but there is no context for the statements made.

Perhaps. But if one wishes to research it further, they certainly could do so.

Judging from the FDA's own site, only 6% of the events reported to date, are considered serious.

That's certainly significant enough that women (and mother's of girls) should be told before they decide to get the vaccine. For the most part, that isn't happening.

The law firm running this ad doesn't share the context however, so to me, it looks like they're just chasing ambulances and trying to get some settlement with Merck.

Probably. But they still give enough facts that someone might be interested in doing some additional research or asking pertinent questions of their doctor before getting the vaccine for themselves or their child. That's a good thing.

Well, most of the links to the stories about this case that I saw several years ago on FR don't work anymore, but here are a few:

Erin Brockovich: Environmental Fraud
Public Health or Brockovich Wealth?
Writer's Slam Angers Real Erin Brockovich

There were several others similar in nature from Michelle Malkin and Michael Fumento, among other writers that use factual documentation to support their position. Did PG&E pollute? Absolutely. Did they handle the situation wrongly? Absolutely. Did they deliberately poison people? That is a bit more doubtful. Did their action result in massive health problems justifying a several hundred million dollar litigation lotto for the law firm that took Brockovich's case? Not likely.

Body parts for medicine. Yeah, they’ve worked hard to keep that quiet. And while we’re at it — remember when they wanted to partial abort infants with their brains intact? I believe it was for research. It’s easier to study fully intact brains.

LOL NONE of them. That was always an interesting moment, when they learned that they could catch STDs thru oral sexual contact. In TX we taught abstinence. Our only reference to condoms was failure rate—we didn’t teach out to use them, etc. I would not have taught what many schools in other states appear to require.

Merck’s ads state that they do not Gardasil does not treat cancer, and does not prevent all forms of HPV which cause cancer.

Yes, I've heard the ads. But this article contains information that may inspire people to do some further research before getting the vaccine. That's a good thing.

Brockovitch’s article makes it seem like they’ve exposed some sort of cover-up.

I guess I didn't see it that way. I read it as a warning to people not to be bowled over by the 'positive press' so to speak, i.e. don't let your governor get away with requiring this vaccine for all girls.

So?

The onus is on you to prove that. ;)

As far as I have learned it was not tested for boys, and that is why it has not been approved. Perhaps testing has now or is being done. But that was my first question. Why only girls?

They claim they don't know what causes it (just like autism). But most of these people got the contaminated experimental vaccine when they were small children.

"Journalists Bookchin and Schumacher argue that for nine years, from 1954 to 1963, almost every dose of polio vaccine produced in the world-and the 98 million Americans who received polio vaccinations-was contaminated with a cancer-causing virus from the monkey kidneys used to develop the vaccine. Although the polio vaccine developed by Dr. Jonas Salk virtually ended polio as a threatening disease, the authors detail how “the screening techniques and observation periods that Salk and the vaccine manufacturers employed were not capable of always catching the contaminants.” This sordid story spells out how repeated research studies showing that the “SV40” virus was in the vaccine were dismissed by federal health officials, so that “there would be no warning to consumers that the vaccine they and their children were receiving contained a live monkey virus whose effect on humans was entirely unknown.” In the second part, the authors contend that even today such organizations as the National Institutes of Health continue to dismiss study results, even though numerous studies have shown that SV40 is capable of causing cancer in humans. The final and most horrific part of the story reports that _____ Laboratories, the sole oral vaccine supplier in the U.S. from 1977 onward, continued to use monkey kidneys possibly infected by the SV40 virus in its manufacturing process until oral polio vaccine was removed from the market as late as January 2000. As far as I have learned it was not tested for boys, and that is why it has not been approved. Perhaps testing has now or is being done. But that was my first question. Why only girls?

Because the strains of the HPV virus that Garadasil protects against account for something like 70% of cervical cancer cases (the number two cause of cancer-related deaths in the world for women and the number one cause of cancer-related deaths for women in the developed world) and 90% of all genital warts. According to the CDC, something like 80% of women will have contracted at least one strain of HPV by age 50 (though most strains are harmless and don't even lead to symptoms)

Some strains of HPV can cause throat cancer and penis cancer, but these kill many fewer people.

So, it makes sense to focus on testing this vaccine on women because, due to the cervical cancer connection, HPV is much more deadly to women than men (the majority of men with HPV don't even exhibit symptoms).

That being said, I'm sure the vaccine will end up being approved for men.

Well, it certainly gave a different view of the vaccine than Merck and certain politicians have tried to present. I would hope you would think that is a good thing.

Considering what seems to pass for journalism these days, maybe they teach things differently now.

I was taught there was a difference between views and facts. Distorting or leaving out important facts isn't simply presenting a different view. It's being dishonest about the subject and trying to mislead people.

I welcome people presenting their views. I welcome people explaining their interpretation of the facts and trying to convince me of the validity of their views.

I very strongly like people trying to mislead me, even if they think they are doing so for a worthy cause. A huge amount of damage has been done to our society in the name of what people considered worthy cause.

They whole anti-gun movement is people distorting facts in the name of what they feel to be a worthy cause.

Everyone is welcome to their own opinions, but they are not welcome to their own version of the facts.

If you truly want to help people, you won't do so through lying to them to get them to believe in your cause.

They might be doing so because Merck could make considerable amounts of money, or because they believe in their product and that it could save many lives.

IIRC, the majority of cervical cancer deaths occur in third world countries because they don't get pap smears, unlike in developed countries like the US of A. Cervical cancer is actually not even in the top five of the list of cancer deaths in the US.

What we do have in the US though, is $$$, and special legislation (enacted in the '80's) shielding drug companies against lawsuits associated with vaccines.

Follow the money.

Now that's a reasonable point of view supported by facts, without obviously leaving out important facts.

If only the author of the article showed the same kind of integrity.

Yeah, it just seems that there should be a two pronged approach, girls get it from boys (usually).

Thanks.

I do find it rather odd and downright disturbing how Gov. Perry of TX, and others, were so quick to try and make this vaccine “mandatory” for all young girls. That part just doesn’t pass the smell test.

If I lived in an area where it was mandatory, I would be furious. It’s very scary when parental rights are eroded in this way. I have relatives who don’t give their kids any vaccinations. I personally think they should, but it’s not my right or the government’s right to make that decision.

That being said, if the vaccine is proven safe, I will probably want my daughter to get the vaccine.

I’m guessing that by the time this vaccine is proved safe , if ever, my grandkids will be looking at getting it, because its track record is not so great up to this point and I’m not using my daughters as guinea pigs for Merck.

They’ll learn the importance of getting regular PAP tests, which will do fine in detecting precancerous changes.

But if the statistics she gives are accurate, she’s right on this one. It doesn’t sound like she’s got anything to gain personally, as if she’s selling something or making a profit off this.

You don't know who this ambulance-chasing scammer is then, do you?

I suggest you read up on Erin's previous scam, involving PG&E and how she took PG&E for millions because of a phoney-baloney chromium scare. See http://www.quackwatch.org/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/brockovich.html for example.

HPV 16 and 18 cause the majority of cervical cancers. This vaccine will save millions of women and men from getting cancer. I know a lot of conservatives see this as encouraging sex for teenagers, but that wrong IMHO. 80% of sexually active people have HPV of some strain. Will the girl’s future husband be a virgin when he marries her? Might he lie about his sexual history? As with all vaccines, there may be some unfortunate side effects for a few people, but HPV is a slow motion epidemic. BTW, boys need vaccination too since they can serve as carriers who spread it among women not to mention that they can get cancer of the penis, throat, mouth, etc. We are just now seeing much greater numbers of men and women with throat cancer caused by HPV 16 & 18 that they caught 30 years ago.
