Pelosi: At-risk Dems back drilling
Politico ^ | 8-5-2008 | Martin Kady II and Patrick O'Connor

California Democrat Nancy Pelosi may be trying to save the planet — but the rank and file in her party increasingly are just trying to save their political hides when it comes to gas prices as Republicans apply more and more rhetorical muscle.

But what looks like intraparty tension on the surface is part of an intentional strategy in which Pelosi takes the heat on energy policy, while behind the scenes she’s encouraging vulnerable Democrats to express their independence if it helps them politically, according to Democratic aides on and off Capitol Hill.

Pelosi’s gambit rests on one big assumption: that Democrats will own Washington after the election and will be able to craft a sweeping energy policy that is heavy on conservation and fuel alternatives while allowing for some new oil drilling. Democrats see no need to make major concessions on energy policy with a party poised to lose seats in both chambers in just three months — even if recess-averse Republicans continue to pound away on the issue.

“The reality is we will have a new president in three months, and what Bush and the Republicans are trying to do amounts to a land grab for the oil companies,” said one senior House Democratic aide involved with party strategy. “I don’t think we have to give in at all pre-election — we have many more options postelection.”

It’s a reality that Rep. Nick J. Rahall (D-W.Va.) personally delivered to President Bush recently.

“So you want an Obama in the White House who’s planning to tax you sox off?”

Where did I say that?

McCain is cutting his own throat and is going to have are hard time getting out the vote. He is an idiot.

I will vote against obambi but I doubt McCain can win with his new campaign.

I'm sure demoncrats believe that. I certainly hope Americans will sick to their guns on drilling.

If Americans are foolish enough to quiet it down, we will eventually have a HUGH crisis.

Being energy self sufficient will keep despots from threatening to cut off our oil.

Couple this with the breathless reporting on lower gas prices from their handmaidens in the Main Stream Media all of a sudden and you begin to get a glimpse of their strategy and DNC talking points...lol

I don’t think it’s gonna work. America is waking up!!

If Shuler has made noises about drilling off shore (don't know whether he has) it will be a ruse to fool the voters with Pelosi protecting his back. He played that game on illegal immigration.

He put in a bill that sounded tough, and even got NumbersUSA to get all hot and bothered about it. But, Shuler knew wvery step of the way that Pelosi would never let that bill reach the floor for a vote, and she didn't. I smell the same kind of rat on this issue, as well.

The game is, "Believe what I say. Never mind the fact that I cast a critical vote to give Pelosi veto power over me." I don't think Shuler is smart enough to think this up on his own. But he does have staffers who are fairly smart cookies.

People playing party politics should be tried for treason against the United States of America.

socialist commie pigs like peloser and nobama do not understand supply and demand. Or they do and as long as they can blame high gas prices on Bush and his oil friends they will. They won't fix anything unless their man gets elected. They are loyal to a political party, not this great Nation of ours.

Obama is even worse the Carter.

Look at some of Obama’s foreign policy advisor's are: Madeline not so bright, Richard Clare, Zbigniew Brzezinski.

They are from the Clinton admin and brought us 911. Brzezinski was in the Carter admin and got rid of the Shah of Iran, the hostage crises and Ayatollah Khomeini.

So much for bright choices.

Lets see her bring it to a vote now.

You know? You can't hurt her approval rating. King George had a better approval rating then Nancy Peloser and Scary Ried.

Confirmation from the Democrats here. Democrats belive they can do nothing, blame Bush and rely on the Dinsour media to protect them. GOP needs to hammer this point about “Do Nothing” Democrats

There is a certain handful of Freepers who do nothing but race from thread to thread trying to hijack the topic off focusing on the Democrat Leaders failures onto bashing Bush or the GOP. I call them the Democrat Party Cacus since the are actively working as the Democrat Party public relations agents.

They never attack the Democrats or the Left. Instead they show up on thread after thread exclusively bashing the GOP or Bush for not doing this, or for doing that, or not doing enough of the other. They are 1 note wonders. If not active members of the Democrat Party, they might as well be based on their actions.

I know they hang around on FR just as the call C-Span ad say they are Republicans.

I think most people understand that and don't head what the say or write.

The only ones who believe their rhetoric and the democrat dummies.

Demoncrat and deceit are synonymous.

Wrong -- Pelosi's gambit rests on the assumption that partisan media shills will spin her desperate rearguard action on the road to her party's defeat as some sort of brilliant if cynical strategy worthy of Richelieu.

Nine Republicans were present at the news conference. Two of them held a sign asking: "NANCY PELOSI – WE'RE HERE, WHERE ARE YOU?"
