America and Republicans are being played for fools by Pelosi (Drilling for oil)
8/3/08 | Poman

Posted on 08/03/2008 12:47:46 PM PDT by Popman

There seems to be this disconnect with understanding just what the democrats are doing or not doing about drilling for oil and in general, a realistic national energy policy

The answer is very simple; The House under the control of Nancy Pelosi was waiting for Obama to change his position on drilling. Do we really think they are that stupid to think we believe we can inflate our tires and tune our cars to fix our energy policy? That was Obama talking off the cuff and since he wasn't on teleprompter he said something stupid which he does quite frequently

Why did Pelosi waiting so long to vote up or down on drilling, because she knows she will lose and the “rat” party can not afford to be in direct opposition to a position Obama has taken, it will make him look weak and not the party leader, cost him and democrat party votes and so we the American pubic watch and wait while Speaker Pelosi sports inanities and to take the heat for the junior Senator from Illinois by not having the American public interest in mind by having a up or down vote on drilling

It’s all in the timing

The democrats are playing the pubbies and us for fools; it is not a coincidence that Obama changed his position on drilling in Florida on the day the Congress recessed.

It's a set up

Obama is the “rat” party ticket for real power, if they can succeed in getting a sixty seat majority in the Senate with a majority in the House, and Obama in the oval office, there will be no stopping them. They just need a big coattail effect on Election Day to achieve that, Obama looking weak and being the lightweight he is, will not achieve that by having the House oppose him as the nominee on his drilling position

Imagine for now, because it will happen, Congress reconvenes in five weeks and Obama had spent the last five weeks pushing his oil/energy plans, nuanced and carefully crafted to appease even the most strident environmental wacko. (Probably it will look just like McCain plan) The very important political hot potato Republicans have been counting to punish the Democrats will disappear.

Pelosi thinks it’s a good plan, Reid thinks they can hammer out a compromise in the Senate, and it goes to vote. Are the pubbies going to fight it? Not on your life.

Obama is the hero; the attuned one with the vision to solve the energy crisis has filled up his empty suit and actually accomplished something meaningful to the American people, at least that will be the MSM talking points.

A very large percent of the American public are deaf, dumb and blind to political realities, all they will hear is how great Obama energy plan is and swing his way.

Why do we let the "rat" political machine play us for fools?

Please how "nuanced" is Obama saying that inflating tires will be the answer to energy independence.

Hadn’t Obama ALREADY caved on the drilling issue when she was interviewed by Stephanopoulos?

I said almost the exact thing last night on another thread. Great minds think alike Popman....It’s the old head fake game. Bush NEEDS to call an emergency session and get the deal the Republicans want on the table and voted on before this bites them in the azz...They can’t let the dunce boy get any positive exposure to this...
they also can’t get this to a vote on a Dem proposal because it will be chock full of restrictions. Then when Republicans vote no on the proposal, Dems and the media will scream to high heavens that the Republicans are in the pockets of big oil blah blah blah....

I think Obama flipped on the drilling issue because of the stupid "properly inflating your tires" comments. He had to flip after those comments. They sounded so incredibly stupid, so he changed the subject. Those comments, alone, could have lost the election for Obama if properly used by the McCain.

The damage is already done. Changing to support drilling now is going to be seen as just what it is, a capitulation. They may minimize the damage, but it isn’t going to help them.

I think you give her way too much credit. Good analysis, but the only thing that is missing to even give it a chance at credibility is Pelosi having a brain, which she clearly doesn't.

Her hammering away at releasing oil from the Strategic Oil Reserve is ample evidence of her brainlessness.

True.....but he HAS flip-flopped on the issue and it was days before the interview with Pelosi.

Do you really think the Dems are that smart?

They seem to be in control.

If they aren't smart enough to do something like this, what does make us?

That was Obama being the assclown empty suit he really is

Do you really thin Obama crafts energy policy?

His wonks do that, he just follows the letters on the teleprompter and smiles

If this is the Dem plan, McCain should start predicting that Obama will soon come around to supporting McCain’s drilling plan. That should prevent the Dems from getting any credit for it when it happens.

"Caved" may be too strong a word.

"Consider" was the word I think he used.

Obama never just changes policy he moves like a chameleon changing colors as the environment dictates.

He doesn't have to take a position to endorse an energy policy that includes some drilling, he just needs to let enough wiggle room for Pelosi to introduce legislation that doesn't conflict with his statements

“Hadn’t Obama ALREADY caved on the drilling issue when she was interviewed by Stephanopoulos?”

Yes, but it was just a rant.

The dems are now trying to re-position themselves better between their hard-left supporters, and the pragmatic American voters.

Deception will be part of the recipe.

Clearly, the McCain Campaign believes that the Democrats will attempt to pull the energy rug out from under them by flip-flopping on off-shore drilling at the last minute (e.g. after Labor Day, when people really start paying attention). That's why McCain's advisors have not heeded the repeated and frenzied calls by every pundit from Rush Limbaugh to Dick Morris to go "all drilling, all the time" in their advertising. The Democrats ability to reverse course at the drop of a hat explains why McCain continues to tout his "enviromental" credentials to the mortification of many conservatives: i.e. he may be able to pick off some disgruntled greenies when the Democrat flop their flip on drilling. That's also why the Senator's people haven't adopted that "consistent theme" or "message" that so many conservatives have urged them to preach.

In other words (and the recent tightening in the polls tends to confirm this), maybe McCain's handlers know a little more than we give them credit for, and maybe the Democrats haven't yet regained their once fabled ability to fool most of the people all of the time.

In a way I think it makes my point, what else can she possible say that makes any sense whatsoever why we don't drill ?

When your position is built on quicksand and the only thing you can say is stupid you keep saying it because after a while people stop listening

I don't buy it. The first thing Nancy Pelosi worries about — above Saving The Planet™, above helping Obama, above everything — is getting Nancy Pelosi re-relected. She hails from one of the most liberal Congressional districts in the United States. Hers are the people who honestly believe we can run the nation on Flower Power and Change™ if we just have the courage to abolish Big Oil.

What Nancy Pelosi does not want to become is Tom Daschle, the "retired" Democratic leader who got too far out of touch with his constituents and so lost his seat.
