To pile on Matt's earlier post, Obama's flip on drilling strikes me as a major error. Even when analyzing it entirely as a political move, where the specifics of the legislation and the popularity of drilling are irrelevant, it still comes off very poorly. Straight up, it just looks like he caved. That is a terrible image for any politician to radiate.
It isn't about moving to the left, right and center. It is about not moving away from yourself. That looks bad, no matter what the bill is, and no matter how popular is may be.
This won't help him get elected. This will do the opposite. Last week, after the Berlin speech, I thought there was no way Obama could lose the election. Now, I worry it might be a toss-up.
About the only thing that could save Obama in this case is that McCain did the exact same thing on this issue earlier in the year. So, they look equally bad, and it is mentioned in the coverage:
Republican rival John McCain, who earlier dropped his opposition to offshore drilling, has been criticizing Obama on the stump and in broadcast ads for clinging to his opposition as gasoline prices topped $4 a gallon. But, that is in the third paragraph, while title reads "Obama shifts, says he may back offshore drilling."
Oh yeah, it is a really sucky idea, too. While allowing Republicans to go through with all of their sucky ideas has actually been an electoral boon for Democrats of late, since the ideas cause major problems. Then again, there is also the problem that those ideas cause major problems. In this case, Obama will help the creation of a major problem along, but actually receive a negative electoral benefit from it. And that is a big-time political error.
You got it ass backwards.
Pelosi and Reid have been waiting on the messiah to move his position from no drilling to nuanced drilling
They have all their hopes and dreams on him winning in November so they cannot take a position as important as drilling if he is not for it. They can't leave him flapping in the breeze being the complete suit he is.
Now that he has "flipped" they can come back in November with a Obama plan to drill, which will be the same position as McCain plan except Obama will be the hero
*IF, we are going to truly defend Israel as her ally, we need to be able to supply our own domestic energy.
*IF, Iran does drop a nuke or worse nukes and Israel responds in kind, we MUST be ready domestically to deal with the energy crisis this will create.
Allies of islam have already aligned for these two scenarios and probably others which will reach to Nigeria and other oil supplying nations.
America without energy is a paper tiger. We will sacrifice, struggle etc. and then what? Democrats will tell us to “inflate our tires?”
No, these traitors to our National Security must be stopped. $4.00 gasoline is the tool to get the American people to act. There is a much more sinister picture than just gasoline. It is heating oil, it is natural gas, it is industry, economy, plastics, products, production, interstate transportation, and food.
I feel our country is in imminent danger both at home and overseas.
I’m stocking up on popcorn.
No bones to pick there
My only concern is a future POTUS (like Obama) using, as a precedent this event, if Bush actually does call them back, to harass the Congress to do his bidding in the future since this isn't done according to the letter of the law.
Because they are delusional, liars, frauds, and hypocrites? These sissies will be whining the loudest when they lose all their conveniences.
Something needs to be done to stop the EnvironMENTALists!
My sister predicted that she will have to pay around $6,000 for heating oil this year. And it will be the same next year, and the year after that, and for decades if we don’t do someting NOW.
If Clinton didn’t ban drilling around ten years ago, we would have reasonably-priced oil now.
“I think ol hillary is going to bide her time and mount a challange in 12-regardless of who wins in Nov. She will challange an incumbent sitting dem-of that I have NO doubt. It will be Carter\Kennedy 80 all over again, but I think she pulls it off.”
I think she’d pull it off too... Regardless of whether or not she’s any better, Obama is unprepared for the challenges facing this country. Anyone will look better than him come 2012, should he win. Half of America could get blown up and his cult would still rave about him, but I think it’s safe to say that most Americans will ensure he’s a one term president at worst.
The writing was terrible, but I was gratified to to hear that dumb, dim, lib, Dems are beginning to second guess “The Annointed One”, too.
What a sad state we find ourselves in . . . . . . . .
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
That is the key, he will say ANYTHING he wants to get elected. Once he is sworn in,"Screw You. I'll do what ever I want". Which is to suck up the the leftest.
