ABC News' Sunlen Miller reports: Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., fought back against the perception that hes shifted away from his opposition to off-shore oil drilling by suggesting he softened his position as a compromise toward a broader energy policy.
Obama first indicated Friday in an interview with the Palm Beach Post that he would be willing to compromise on his opposition to off-shore drilling, and would consider expanding the current drilling boundaries -- if it was part of a plan to make the country more energy independent by developing more fuel-efficient cars and alternative energy sources.
Today, at a press availability in Cape Canaveral, Fla., Obama said that his comments werent a shift.
This wasnt really a new position. What Im saying is that we cant drill our way out of the problem, he told reporters. And if we can come up with a genuine bi-partisan compromise in which I have to accept some things I dont like, or the Democrats have to accept some things that they dont like, in exchange for actually moving us in the direction of energy independence, then that is something I am open to.
On Friday, the bi-partisan Gang of 10 group of senators unveiled a compromise energy plan that would include opening areas of the Gulf of Mexico and southeast Atlantic to drilling - in addition to raising taxes on major oil companies. Part of the plan also includes oil exploration 50 miles off of Floridas coastline - a state that is an important battleground in the general election.
Obama said that while he hasnt seen the Gang of 10s final legislation, he understood it has some aggressive elements that could move America in the direction of energy independence.

Flip Flopping Away
You know the nearer your destination
The more you'll be Flip Flopping Away
I’m waiting for the press to publish some articles on Chicago politics. Maybe in December?
What Obama is really saying:
“I’m saying that I didn’t say what you said I said, because today I’m saying what I did say which is different from what you think I said because I didn’t say that, I’m saying I said something different than what I said because today is different and what I say now is different but it’s not different from what I said because I said something different but it’s not different. It’s the same.”
Now you know where he stands.
Have you ever seen anyone use “I” as many times as this arrogant lying slimeball?
Anyone good at gif. making? I can see the pic of him in that muslim gard spinning like a whirling dirvish :-)
*garb
Come on now. It’s not a flip-flop.
Lord Obama has simply assumed a more nuanced position.
He was against drilling for oil before he was for it—however that was his position all-along because this is the “change we can believe in”.
bozo’s gonna implode after labor day when the election year politics gets hot!
But isnt he the Messiah, the one we heard about from the Germans? Did he not do great feats and miracles? But, nay, he was not present and, when present, voted Present. No bill came forth from his rhetoric. While refuting the fallacies of the surge, he refused comfort to the afflicted. Indeed, he flipped the flop of an energy plan. And so they crucified him and nailed him to the truth of his ways.
How exactly are any of his positions different from McCains now?
Kinda like:
“I know you believe you understand what you think I said, but I’m not sure you realize that’s not what I meant.”
He will be for it with so many pre-conditions that it will never haoppen.
Everybody is allowed to change their mind. OItherwise we would all forever be as reported by the First Grade teacher. However, rationalizing the decision to change a mind seems like CYA.
Hussein has not said he will not raise taxes. No No no.
Change we can believe in....right.....
The change I can believe in from Obama? I believe he can change what he says to different audiences almost instantly without batting an eye.
The only constant I see from him is an insatiable lust for power.
"Word."
The comprehensive approach has been on the table all along.
So, what's he saying??
