A police SWAT team raided the home of the mayor in the Prince George's County town of Berwyn Heights on Tuesday, shooting and killing his two dogs, after he brought in a 32-pound package of marijuana that had been delivered to his doorstep, police said.

Yeah, I agree. This was overkill. Since they never told the local police, it COULD have gotten ugly too.

exposing yourself and allowing for an ambush or the arming of your suspects are things cops want to avoid. so they use these tactics.
i do not think all raids are the same. a crackhouse in a maze of apartments in the projects is one thing. a single house in the suburbs would seem to be another. perhaps they should not be handled in the same way. but they usually are.
I have to say that in this instance the cops were wrong. They aren’t ALWAYS wrong though. Stereotyping ANY profession is dangerous.

LOL! Try comprehending what was written. The guy picked up the package and brought it "in" to his house. Not "turned it in" to the cops.
Typical sting here. The post office picks up a suspicious package and calls the postal inspectors. They check it out and determine there are illegal drugs inside. They make the necessary arrangements, set up surveillance and deliver the package. When it is received into the house, they jump out from behind the bushes and shoot your dogs. Simple really....
but if has gotten to the point of a raid, there is no doubt in anyone's mind that the intel is solid. so the entry team just wants the facts of the raid. they do not care how the intel was received. probable cause is the job of the investigators and all too often, they take the word of drug abusing crackheads who would give up their mother to avoid felony charges.
so they tell the cops what the cops want to hear and there is little follow-up. but this kind of thing is the exception. that is why we read about it in the papers. there are hundreds of raids executed hourly around the country that produce excellent results.

It sounds like it could be a setup and the cops bought it. The package was addressed to the wife, Trinity Tomsic.

But they do this at the expense of everyone else’s safety. And for what? Marijuana? This just does not make any sense.
Seems like a way to get yourself killed, I mean, breaking down doors and storm trooping in. A simple knock is so much better.
Where was the search warrant? Have you checked out the photo of he and his wife?
The package was unopened which will make it difficult to prove he knowingly possessed the marijuana.
My Soldiers and I did much the same thing in Iraq for about a year. We DID get intel on why we were hitting this particular house, and we also exercised proper restraint against the household and their possessions (they don’t have pets). Very often our intel was wrong, too, and we would hit the wrong house.
These actions by these SWAT teams smacks of amateurish nonsense. Pure fear, lack of professionalism, and most likely a sense of “we can do whatever we want, because no one will questions us.”

would you be willing to trade a dead cop who went up to knock on the door for the dogs? some here would i am sure and that is there perogative. this is all monday morning QB'ing anyway.
