I doubt this is a coincidence that Stevens is being indicted now. Draw your conclusions.

The conclusions I draw:

1. This has been in the pipeline for a long time and could have been dealt with behind the scenes if GOP officials had been so inclined, with the end result being Stevens retiring from public office to possibly face prosecution, but as a citizen, not a senior GOP senator during a tough election year.

2. If the GOP were concerned about corruption at all, they would have done something about Stevens after the "Bridge to Nowhere" mess, but they did not.

3. This sort of bad timing is entirely predictable but would have been at least somewhat avoidable if Stevens had been forced out earlier. He wasn't, so this is the result.

4. Republican voters need to demand a house-cleaning of party officials to restore faith that they are committed to doing the honest thing.

drill in Alaska and since every citizen in Alaska gets royalties it would benefit them.

Oil production in ANWR or NPRA will not add to the Permanent Fund Dividend that Alaskans receive. That is only for production on State Land. ANWR and NPRA as well as the Alaskan OCS is all federal. Alaskan's would benefit from the jobs and other related infrastructure, but not the royalties.

If ANWR and NPRA were state lands, they would have flowed oil decades ago like Prudhoe Bay and the rest of the producing North Slope.

Absolutely. Good riddance to bad rubbish. His Bridge to Nowhere is a national monument to stupidity and congressional pork.

Can the Alaska Republicans replace Stevens with a more electable candidate right before the election, like the New Jersey Democrats did in 2002 when they replaced Torricelli with Lautenberg?

Yes, if he wins the primary, and agrees to step down afterwards.

“This is one guy that should have went down a long time ago”

AMEN! Now,if the DOJ would just go after the other 534 crooks in congress, we might see some REAL change. For a change, so to speak. My lifelong dream is to see every member of the senate and the house frog-marched out of their ivory towers into waiting BOP buses, and carted off to solitary confinement in, say, Maricopa county, AZ.

If he is guilty he deserves this, but it is more bad news for the GOP at a bad time.

Well then, you might as well just vote Obama.
Man, you had a solid argument going about how dangerous this man is and then vote for a throwaway like Nader or Paul.
I can’t take you seriously.

If not for RINOs there wouldn't be enough Rs to fill a city bus.

Pretty sad, isn't it? Maybe at some point the GOP will decide to clean house and get rid of the RINOs, otherwise they are just going to keep on losing more and more support from Conservatives.

As far as I'm concerned, the only difference between a RINO like Stevens and a Democrat is the "R" next to their name. A vote for a RINO is still a vote for a liberal, no matter what angle you look at it.

Good!

He was the most hated Republican Senator when I worked in Washington DC.

He abused his authority, demanded A LOT, and was a 14 carrot jerk to not only his staff, but everyone from the DoD I worked with.

He thought the world revolved around him.

He also thought that every penny of taxpayers money was his personal bank account.

Moreover, he and Ms. Darleen Druyun (aka - the Dragon Lady Who Went To Federal Prison) were two peas in a pod in terms of abusing the DoD budget and contracting system.

I personally witnessed these two "Distinguished Public Servants" lay out career military officers who had Purple Hearts on their uniform - simply because they wanted to look good in front of their staffs and feel the power.

And where are the charges against the corrupt dimocrats?

You can start with Ted Kennedy, Chuck Schumer, Hillary Clinton, Al Sharpton, etc. etc. Go through the whole list.

I'll give you an example of why Ted Stevens was a total jerk.

A few of my friends over the years have been in the Thunderbirds. In fact, I also know some officers who were married to Thunderbird pilots.

Stevens was always lobbying for airshows in Alaska - which was no problem. BUT - he abused his authority as Appropriations Chairman and thought that budget responsibility gave him "clout" to tell pilots performing dangerous airshows what to do.

Flying in the Thurderbirds and the Navy's Blue Angels is tough duty. Everyone thinks it is "glamorous." In fact, it is a stomach acid producing job. Not always - and they do love it - but it isn't a picnic.

Stevens would pressure the Thunderbirds (and the Blue Angels) to perform in bad Alaskan weather. If they pushed back, he behaved like a 3 year old, and called every military officer he could think of. Then, he threatened to pull every dollar he could that they had been pegged for in the President's Budget.

One time, I was on the phone and I was told by a Navy friend that Stevens threatened Navy funding because they Blue Angel commander refused to fly in such bad weather. Stevens replied:

"Well! I guess the G_dDamned Navy can't fly in the F_cking Fog!!!????"

Apples and Oranges in terms of combat and precision airshows - and Stevens knew it - but he didn't care.

So, the pilots would go out and face a safety risk - because HE wanted it.

That is the kind of man he is.

Jefferson is a Democrat who deserves jail, but us Conservatives comparing Stevens to him serves us nothing.

Jefferson is corrupt and deserves prison, but so does Stevens.

We should not lay out the other side's corruption because it makes Conservatism look defensive and petty.

Here it is: Sen. Stevens broke the law. Punish him for it - and punish every politician who does it.

When Republicans get caught, it only hurts us to point fingers at others.

It is better for us to say: "Yup - he did wrong and if the courts find him/her guilty, they deserve their punishment."

This investigation has been going on for a while and is part of a larger probe of corruption in Alaska. I didn’t think they would get all the way to Stevens though.

Politicans are legally allowed to lie.

They can lie to us with impunity all day long, but things get serious as soon as they lie to the government on financial disclosure forms. Interesting double standard.

I thought he was bad for the bridge to nowhere, and worse for this scandal, but this seals it: he is slime, just as bad as the worst Democrat for putting military lives at risk for his personal amusement. The stench in Congress will go down when he’s gone.

What wonderful election year profit for the Marxists to use against the stupid, self inflicted wound, republicans. They damned republicans will not, cannot, win because they continually find a way to screw up, foul up, mess up, and cannot get out of their own stupid way. They are complete and utter idiots. They truly do not deserve our support. But who the else do we have?

Amen FRiend.

No need to push for complaints about Democrat corruption here. We all know they are corrupt.

It is far, far better to get the Poison that Stevens was out of our own bloodstream. Moreover, admitting his guilt just the Democrats because they NEVER do that!

So...my advice is....cut Stevens the Jerk loose......and good riddence.

By the way Ted, how is that wonderful work on the House by the Lake the Defense Contractors bribed you for?
