WASHINGTON One of the wealthiest counties in America reports crime skyrocketing by 22 percent in the first quarter of 2008, while its neighbor saw crime plummet by 19.3 percent in the same time period coinciding with a get-tough policy on illegal immigration.
Prince William County in Northern Virginia, a bedroom community for the nation's capital, made national news late last year with a crackdown on illegal immigration that supervisors believed was triggering higher crime and lower living standards.
Prince William County reported a 19.3 percent decline in crime, with chairman of the Board of County Supervisors Corey Stewart attributing the downturn to the hard line the county has taken toward illegal immigrants.
"One quarter doesn't tell us a lot," said county police spokeswoman Mary Ann Jennings. "It shows us where they may be some trends developing."

Ping!
ban crime,work everytime
Shouldn’t this have been reported in the WaPo? Oh, wait!
It’s no different that rat control. Get rid of open trash cans and remove sources of food, and rats will leave and go to another neighborhoon. Crack down of illegal migrants and they will move to a neighboring area that doesn’t have the crackdowns.
Interesting? Not a word I would have chosen.
And just how many good Freepers would steal and/or break some laws when you are homeless and hungry and out of work?
I sincerely hope we don’t find out.
None of the illegal immigrants are wearing Dorothy’s red shoes...where you simply click your heels to go back home.

Very true. I also have to wonder how many illegals were sucked up by a tornado and mysteriously ended up outside the Emerald City.
Latin America is beautiful, with lots of natural resources, perhaps if they protested and demanded their rights in their home countries like they do here, things would change.
Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac shouldn't have let so many foreclosures happen.
The Housing industry should not have let construction fall into the ditch (economically speaking).
All Fairfax did was increase enforcement of its "no more than 3 unrelated people allowed in a single family dwelling" law.
Next thing you know there were big bunches of these guys wandering the streets, unemployed, and no one cares.
Well, if Fairfax County was smart, it’d emulate Prince William County, and its crime rate would suddenly drop just as suddenly as it has risen. But Fairfax County’s leadership is not that smart.
You don't have to find out because we typically do not get into that situation. I have been in a position where I had no place to go, no money, and no contacts, where I had to get work immediately, or face some pretty dire consequences. I knocked on every door and filled out every application, and had work by the next day. The minimum wage pay sucked and the work sucked, but it was work. After I got off work, I continued to knock on doors and fill out applications. Within a week, I had a job that paid more (though the work still sucked). Over the next six months, I moved through a succession of jobs, until I finally wound up in a position where I was doing pretty well and had an opportunity for advancement.

They can get home. They just don't want to go home. Even with increased enforcement, the prospects are still better here. What they really want are Ruby Slippers that let them come and go at will.
Proud resident of Prince William County here.
Nauseating to some perhaps...but valid nonetheless. The sheer numbers of displaced illegals out of Prince William Slum...er, County, explain the rise in stats.
There has to be children with empty stomachs...and many empty gas tanks somewhere in the equation.
I am not condoning the burglaries and thefts....just 'splaining it to some of the more narrow-minded and ignorant among us.
That’s the reason it is so important for people to stay home and build their own lives. They should have their own place in an extended family, church and community where they would be horrified to steal from their own neighbors. Where friends and family would help each other out and work together for the future.
Wait a second. Removing people who have shown themselves to have no respect for our laws leads to a reduction in crime? Are you sure?

Personally I think the best way to end this plague is not to target individuals, though that is important and must be done. The best way to fight this and what I think the central aspect of any attempt to get rid of these people should be is to go after employers aggressively. Take away their access to jobs and you will fewer people enter the US and more selfdeport.
