“Looks like the Germans figured out why Obama won’t allow anyone to bring anything into his big show,” Beethovenqueen writes.
The Bild headline reads “Barack Obama bans protest signs in Berlin.”
The article then goes on to say:
Obamas Organisatoren wollen nichts dem Zufall überlassen. Auf Handzetteln, die seit Montag für die Rede im Berliner Bezirk Tiergarten ausgeteilt werden, heißt es: „Plakate oder Transparente sind nicht gestattet.“
Aus Sicherheitsgründen sollen die Besucher auch keine Taschen und Rucksäcke mitnehmen dürfen.
Translation:
Obama’s organization is leaving nothing to chance. As of Monday flyers are being passed out near Berlin’s Zoo that read “Posters & banners not allowed.” For security reasons visitors should not take purses or backpacks.
The latter will put off Germans. How are people supposed to stand out there for hours with no water and no worldly possessions? Or is someone making a killing on selling Kool Aid? Anyway, the headline is a hopeful sign that at least some of the German press see through Obama’s “security demands”.
Update #1: Sen. Obama’s website clearly states: “For security reasons, do not bring bags. Please limit personal belongings. No signs or banners permitted.”
Note that the location posted on Sen. Obama’s website is stated as the Berlin Tiergarten (the zoo), with the Siegessaulle (Victory Column) in finer print. One thing we can count on is the Obama campaign’s willingness to distract and distort reality.
Other German newspapers—Zeit Online, Berliner Zeitung—back up the Bild’s story. Word came from the Obama campaign.

I wonder if this reminds them of the Hitler rallies. Admittedly a lot of them weren’t born, but given how hugely it is part of their history, I don’t doubt that many of them might be creeped out if not outright alarmed at the direction Obama’s campaign is taking.
My daughter recently returned from studying in Berlin for two years. Obama has rock star status in Berlin and Germany. Expect a large and enthusiastic German crowd supporting Obama. It will be a huge media event for him--not just in Germany but here.
Why do you assume that it will received negatively by mainstream Germans? Most are not Hitler-fans... true. That’s not what I am suggesting. But the vast majority are historical blind, either through lack of interest or on purpose. They just love to paint Bush, the US and Israel as the new “Nazis, militarists and aggressors”. They are sympathetic to anything that will harm us, because to them WE are the evil side. And they have a streak within them (since centuries) that makes them obedient to authority, the state and socialism. That’s something that hasn’t change a little in Germany. They look to the almighty authority of the government to help, protect and sustain them from cradle to grave. From Right to Left. Thus they are enamored by statists by whatever name they come. Obama is highly attractive to them, (although they probably would never vote for a colored/ethnic minority man in their own country.)
I see. Thankfully I live in a country that does not blindly obey authority.
I remember one thread that mentioned that blacks will supposedly get more ‘respect’ from foreigners as a result of Obama getting elected.
I wonder how the Chinese will react to Obama lecturing them on Tibet.

The smart ones left Europe on time.
That’s the very reason they stuck with the Red/Blue scheme of 2000. It got a little uncomfortable associating Democrats with Communist red.
It used to be that the INCUMBENT party was always represented by blue, and the challenger by red.

He’s not really... these stunts are aimed at the mushy middle in the US electorate that will place importance in “feeling good” about themselves if their president is adored overseas.

I wonder f there is something more calculating than wanting to avoid protester’s signs- something to do with filming it for commercials, but I can’t put it together.
I thought it was the tradition that the color referred to whether a candidate was incumbent party or not? Thereby, it would change back and forth.
